  • Health Care Utilization With Telemedicine and In-Person Visits in Pediatric Primary Care

Open Access•Scott D Casey, Jie Huang et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2024

In this cohort study, telephone and video visits for pediatric primary care were associated with less prescribing and ordering than in-person visits. Telemedicine visits were associated with modestly higher rates of subsequent in-person visits and slightly higher rates of ED visits, and there was no difference in hospitalizations. Telemedicine appears to be a useful vehicle for health care delivery in the pediatric population, although it is not …

  • Diabetes and Asthma Case Identification, Validation, and Representativeness When Using Electronic Health Data to Construct Registries for Comparative Effectiveness and Epidemiologic Research

    Jay R Desai, Jay Desai et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2012•References: 24

BACKGROUND: Advances in health information technology and widespread use of electronic health data offer new opportunities for development of large scale multisite disease-specific patient registries. Such registries use existing data, can be constructed at relatively low cost, include large numbers of patients, and once created can be used to address many issues with a short time between posing a question and obtaining an answer. Potential appli…

  • Asthma self-assessment in a Medicaid population

Open Access•Ann Chen Wu, James Glauber et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2009

Mailing asthma self-assessment surveys to patients with poorly controlled asthma was not associated with better asthma-associated outcomes or processes of care in the Medicaid population studied. Adding a gift card incentive did not meaningfully increase response rates. Asthma disease management programs for Medicaid populations will most likely need to involve alternative strategies for engaging patients and their providers in managing their con…

  • Real-Time Vaccine Safety Surveillance for the Early Detection of Adverse Events

    Tracy A Lieu, Martin Kulldorff et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2007•References: 10

BACKGROUND: Rare but serious adverse events associated with vaccines or drugs are often nearly impossible to detect in prelicensure studies and require monitoring after introduction of the agent in large populations. Sequential testing procedures are needed to detect vaccine or drug safety problems as soon as possible after introduction. OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate a new real-time surveillance system that uses dynamic data files and sequen…

  • Attitudes of healthcare workers in U.S. hospitals regarding smallpox vaccination

Open Access•W Katherine Yih, Tracy A Lieu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2003

The success of smallpox vaccination efforts will ultimately depend on the relative weight in people's minds of the risk of vaccine adverse events compared with the risk of being exposed to the disease. Although more than half of the respondents thought the likelihood of a bioterrorist smallpox attack was intermediate or high, less than 10% of the group slated for vaccination has actually accepted it at this time. Unless new information about the …

  • Blood lead testing by pediatricians

    S C Ferguson, Sancia Ferguson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 8

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate adherence and identify ways to improve concordance between blood lead testing guidelines and practice. METHODS: One hundred fifty-five pediatricians responded to a questionnaire assessing demographic, knowledge, and attitudinal factors relating to lead testing. RESULTS: Only 27% of the respondents adhered to the guidelines, and less than half knew all of the answers to three factual questions about the rec…

  • Risk factors for delayed immunization among children in an HMO

    Tracy A Lieu, S B Black et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1994•Cited by: 17•References: 6

OBJECTIVES. Improving the timely delivery of childhood immunizations has become a national imperative. This study aimed to identify nonfinancial predictors of delayed immunization among patients with good financial access to preventive care. METHODS. This prospective cohort study used telephone interviews and a computerized immunization tracking system to evaluate 13-month-old children (n = 530) in a regional group-model health maintenance organi…

  • Race, ethnicity, and access to ambulatory care among US adolescents

Tracy A Lieu, Paul W Newacheck et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993•Cited by: 24•References: 24

OBJECTIVES. Improving the health of minority adolescents will require a better understanding of factors that influence their access to and use of health care. This study describes the differences in health care access and use among White, Black and Hispanic adolescents and evaluates how such differences are influenced by insurance. METHODS. We used data on 7465 10- to 17-year-olds included in the child health supplement to the 1988 National Healt…
