Cancer Risk Awareness and Concern among Women with a Family History of Breast or Ovarian Cancer
Women with a documented deleterious mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 are at substantially elevated risk for ovarian cancer. To understand what percentage of women with high-risk family histories know their risk is elevated we surveyed 1,885 women with a high- or moderate-risk family history and no personal history of breast or ovarian cancer, and asked about their perceived risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Among high-risk women, fewer than 20% report…
Information Women Receive About Heart Attacks and How It Affects Their Knowledge, Beliefs, and Intentions to Act in a Cardiac Emergency
In this study we investigate (a) what information women receive on acute myocardial infarction (AMI) from different information sources, (b) how women evaluate this information, and (c) how information acquisition is related to women's knowledge of AMI, personal risk perceptions, and behavioral intentions regarding a cardiac emergency. A random sample of 844 women 50 years and over were telephoned in the state of Washington. Repeated measures reg…

The use of mammography by survivors of breast cancer
OBJECTIVES: Survivors of breast cancer are at high risk for development of a second breast cancer and are thus a group for whom annual mammography screening is recommended. However, survivors' use of mammography rarely has been examined. METHODS: We surveyed a representative population sample of survivors who lived in rural communities about their mammography use after cancer. RESULTS: Of these women, 30% had not received a mammogram in the prece…
Mammography screening
OBJECTIVES. Recent legislation will improve insurance coverage for screening mammography and effectively lower its cost to many women. Although cost has been cited as a barrier to use, evidence of the magnitude of its effect on use is limited. METHODS. Mammography use in the past 2 years among women aged 50 to 75 residing in four suburban or rural counties in Washington State was estimated from 1989 survey data. Logistic regression analysis was u…
Comparisons of Strategies to Prevent Breast Cancer Mortality
A health system should meet the health needs of the population. Given limited resources, choices are made about problems—typically, diseases—to attack. Then, choices must be made as to how to identify, treat, and ultimately, prevent their occurrences. This process is the subject of this article; it uses the case of breast cancer to examine allocation of resources to disease prevention and treatment. The paper reviews current allocation patterns a…
Estimating the Treatment Costs of Breast and Lung Cancer
The Continuous Medicare History Sample File (CMHSF) was used to derive an estimate of the lifetime direct medical expenses attributable to two chronic diseases, lung cancer and female breast cancer. These two cancers are the leading cancer causes of death in men and women in the United States. They inflict large costs on the population, both direct and indirect, but the costs have been difficult to measure. The primary obstacle to quantification …
The Costs of a Suburban Paramedic Program in Reducing Deaths Due to Cardiac Arrest
The marginal costs per averted death of a suburban paramedic program are estimated to be approximately $42,000, when program costs are attributed entirely to cardiac arrest cases due to underlying heart disease, and indirect costs attributable to episode-related hospitalization are included, It is suggested that at $42,000 per cardiac arrest death averted the program is cost-beneficial by two criteria. First, it compares favorably with an estimat…
