Housing instability as a distinct risk factor in child protective services investigations
Association of School Instructional Mode with Community Covid-19 Incidence during August–December 2020 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio
Remote and hybrid modes of instruction were employed as alternatives to in-person instruction as part of early mitigation efforts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We investigated the impact of a public school district's instructional mode on cumulative incidence and transmission in the surrounding community by employing a generalized estimating equations approach to estimate the association with weekly COVID-19 case counts by zip code in Cuy…
Children removed for inadequate housing are less likely to be reunified than peers
This study examined the prevalence of citing inadequate housing as a removal reason at the state level by utilizing data from the Adoption and Foster Care Reporting and Analysis System (AFCARS) and investigated the relationship between inadequate housing and reunification outcomes. The results revealed heterogeneity in citing inadequate housing as a reason for removal at the state level. Moreover, when children are from families struggling with b…
Post–Affordable Care Act Improvements in Cancer Stage Among Ohio Medicaid Beneficiaries Resulted From an Increase in Stable Coverage
BACKGROUND: The mechanisms underlying improvements in early-stage cancer at diagnosis following Medicaid expansion remain unknown. We hypothesized that Medicaid expansion allowed for low-income adults to enroll in Medicaid before cancer diagnosis, thus increasing the number of stably-enrolled relative to those who enroll in Medicaid only after diagnosis (emergently-enrolled). METHODS: Using data from the 2011-2017 Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillan…
Gendered “Long Arm” of Parental Education? Life Course Influences on Later Life Functional Limitations in India
Objective: We adopt a novel approach to mediation analysis to account for interrelated life course social processes that constitute later life health disparities. We examine gender-specific direct effect of parental education on functional limitations in later life. Method: Based on the first wave (2007-2010; n = 7,150) of the Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health (SAGE), we estimate both (natural) direct and indirect effects of parental educat…

Early Origins of Later Life Psychological Well-Being? A Novel Application of Causal Mediation Analysis to Life Course Research
Contrary to prior literature, we found no positive direct influence of parental education on later life psychological well-being, but established its influence through socioeconomic positioning over the life course

The soldier’s recording was made and released while he was deployed to an active war zone and is a document of his experience. Describing …
Loss of Health Insurance and the Risk for a Decline in Self-Reported Health and Physical Functioning
BACKGROUND: Millions of Americans are intermittently uninsured. The health consequences of this are not known. SETTING: National survey. PARTICIPANTS: Six thousand seventy-two participants in the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) age 51 to 61 years old with private insurance in 1992. MEASUREMENTS: Loss of insurance coverage between 1992 and 1992 and development of a major decline in overall health or a new physical difficulty between 1994 and 199…
Lack of Health Insurance and Decline in Overall Health in Late Middle Age
BACKGROUND: The number of adults in their 50s and 60s in the United States who do not have health insurance is increasing. This group may be particularly vulnerable to the ill effects of being uninsured. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study using files from the Health and Retirement Study, a national survey of adults who were 51 to 61 years old in 1992. We determined the risks of a major decline in overall health and of the developmen…
