Focus groups reveal how threat vigilance hinders social needs screening and referrals in the emergency department
Introduction Screening for unmet social needs (such as food or housing insecurity) in healthcare settings has the potential to promote patient health by connecting them with needed resources, but many patients decline to complete screening instruments. The purpose of this paper was to identify the barriers and facilitators of patient participation in social needs screening. Methods Between December 2022 and March 2023, we conducted four virtual f…
Who saves energy and why? Analysing diverse behaviours in 27 European countries
This paper investigates the decision to undertake a range of energy saving actions using individual survey data. Responses to eleven different energy saving actions are examined. These actions are also grouped together under broader curtailment, efficiency and transport categories for additional insights. The final sample comprises over 20,000 responses from a Eurobarometer survey dataset across 27 European countries. Quantitative multivariate mo…
Gender Disparities in the Real World

Medical Spanish Standardization in U.S. Medical Schools
Medical Spanish (MS) education is in growing demand from U.S. medical students, providers, and health systems, but there are no standard recommendations for how to structure the curricula, evaluate programs, or assess provider performance or linguistic competence. This gap in medical education and assessment jeopardizes health care communication with Hispanic/Latino patients and poses significant quality and safety risks. The National Hispanic He…
A Systematic Review of the Impact of Patient–Physician Non-English Language Concordance on Quality of Care and Outcomes
Factors Associated With Accuracy of Self-Assessment Compared With Tested Non–English Language Proficiency Among Primary Care Providers
BACKGROUND: There are no accepted best practices for clinicians to report their non-English language (NEL) fluencies. Language discordance between patients with limited English proficiency and their clinicians may contribute to suboptimal quality of care. OBJECTIVES: To compare self-assessed clinician NEL proficiency with a validated oral language proficiency test. To identify clinician characteristics associated with self-assessment accuracy. SU…
Relationship Between Self-assessed and Tested Non–English-language Proficiency Among Primary Care Providers
BACKGROUND: Individuals with limited English proficiency experience poor patient-clinician communication. Most studies of language concordance have not measured clinician non-English-language proficiency. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the accuracy of the self-assessment of non-English-language proficiency by clinicians compared with an oral proficiency interview. SUBJECTS: Primary care providers (PCPs) in California and Massachusetts. MEASURES: PCPs fi…
