  • The State Itself as a Vulnerable Subject? Existential Resilience under International Law

    Open Access•Alex Green•ARTICLE•Modern Law Review•2026

This paper proposes a new framework for analysis of the law governing State continuity, with particular reference to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) threatened with legal extinction as a result of rising sea‐levels. Prevailing wisdom suggests that if States were to lose their inhabitable land or permanently resident populations, their status under international law would thereby lapse. On such accounts, international law is presumed to be a…

  • Towards a Wagnerian Jurisprudence

    Open Access•Alex Green•ARTICLE•German Law Journal•2025

The libretto and score of Richard Wagner’s famous tetralogy, Der Ring des Nibelungen , were influenced by various philosophers, including Ludwig Feuerbach and Arthur Schopenhauer. Several themes within these Gesamtkunstwerke , including authenticity, compassion, idealism, and love, have subsequently received detailed philosophical attention. Lacking, however, is a systematic philosophical interpretation of legal symbolism within The Ring Cycle . …

  • A Tale of Two Cities

    Open Access•James K Sebenius, Alex Green•ARTICLE•Negotiation Journal•2025

In 2018, Amazon made a surprise announcement in its highly competitive selection of a second headquarters (HQ2), a project that drew 238 bids from cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Instead of one location, the company picked two, selecting Long Island City, Queens in New York City and National Landing, a massive parcel of land directly across the Potomac River from Washington D.C. in Virginia. HQ2 represented one of the largest eco…

  • State Continuity, Self-Determination and Sea-Level Rise

Open Access•Alex Green, Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh•ARTICLE•International and Comparative Law…•2025

This article contends that anthropogenic sea-level rise seriously undermines the exercise of self-determination by peoples living in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Moreover, it argues that the effects of this would be severely exacerbated if the international community were to reject the possibility of statehood enduring notwithstanding total submergence, the complete loss of inhabitable land or the mass exodus of extant populations. In s…

  • The Australia-Tuvalu Falepili Union Treaty

Open Access•Alex Green, Alexander L Green et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of International…•2024•Cited by: 1

On November 9, 2023, Prime Minister Albanese of Australia and then Prime Minister Natano of Tuvalu signed the Australia-Tuvalu Falepili Union Treaty in Rarotonga (Falepili Union Treaty or the Treaty). The preamble explains that “the concept of Falepili . . . connotes the traditional values of good neighbourliness, duty of care and mutual respect.” It sets a groundbreaking precedent for Small Island States threatened by rising sea-levels, addressi…

  • The Importance of Dystopian Hypotheticals

    Open Access•Alex Green•ARTICLE•Law Technology and Humans•2022

This paper argues that liberal philosophy underestimates the importance of political ethics, which I define as the question of how individual citizens should comport themselves politically under largely normal conditions. Using three case studies from popular dystopian science fiction as ‘intuition pumps’, I contend that the behaviour of such individuals, both discretely and collectively speaking, has significant causal potency when it comes to c…

  • Jurisprudence of the Future

Open Access•Alex Green, Martin Travis et al.•ARTICLE•Law Technology and Humans•2022

The future is in flux. There are many vectors of change, and none seem positive. Dark dystopian futures of war, climate catastrophe, polarising inequalities and digital disruption seem to be looming. This narrating of the future suggests the significance of science fiction. Science fiction acts as a storehouse for the imagining of the future. It also offers new approaches to justice and law. This symposium on ‘Jurisprudence of the Future’ contain…

  • The Precarious Rationality of International Law

    Open Access•Alex Green•ARTICLE•German Law Journal•2021

Some scholars assume that the content and validity of international legal norms turns upon the existence of convergent attitudes and behaviors of state representatives and other ‘international legal officials’. By converging upon the criteria for what counts as a ‘formal source’ of international law and what does not, such officials provide a ‘rule of recognition’ in relation to which the normative content of the international legal system is det…

  • Effect of dendroremediation incentives on the profitability of short-rotation woody cropping of Eucalyptus grandis

    Open Access•Matthew Langholtz, Douglas R Carter et al.•ARTICLE•Forest Policy and Economics•2005•References: 1

  • A Publicly Funded Pharmacy Program under Medicaid in New York City

Florence Kavaler, Lowell Eliezer Bellin et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1969

The New York City Medicaid Pharmacy program is the largest of its kind in the country. In 1968, 17.9 million dollars were paid to private licensed pharmacies, participating in Medicaid, for the delivery of pharmacy services to Medicaid enrollees. This sum represented 12 per cent of all funds paid for personal health care services provided by private health care practitioners in 1968. From the inception of Medicaid in May 1966, the pharmacy progra…
