  • Public economic gains from tax-financed investments in childhood immunization in the United States

Open Access•Mark P Connolly, Nikolaos Kotsopoulos et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

The emergence of COVID-19 has displayed the importance of immunization and the need for continued public investment in vaccination programs. Globally, national vaccination programs rely heavily on tax-financed expenditure, requiring upfront investments and ongoing financial commitments. To evaluate annual public investments, we conducted a fiscal analysis that quantifies the public economic consequences to government in the United States attribut…

  • A Retrospective Analysis to Estimate the Burden of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease and Non-Invasive Pneumonia in Children <15 Years of Age in the Veneto Region, Italy

Open Access•Elisa Barbieri, Gloria Porcu et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

Despite advances in preventative interventions, invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia cause significant morbidity and mortality in children. We studied the annual incidence of pneumococcal-specific and syndromic invasive disease and non-invasive pneumonia in children <15 years of age during the early (2010−2013) and late (2014−2017) 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) periods in Veneto, Italy. In this retrospective observationa…

  • A Retrospective Database Analysis to Estimate the Burden of Acute Otitis Media in Children Aged <15 Years in the Veneto Region (Italy)

Open Access•Elisa Barbieri, Gloria Porcu et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

This study aimed to assess trends in the incidence of acute otitis media (AOM), a common childhood condition, following the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) in the Veneto region of Italy in 2010. AOM episodes (overall, simple, and recurrent (≥3 or ≥4 episodes in 6 or 12 months, respectively, with ≥1 episode in the preceding 6 months)) in children <15 years of age were identified in Pedianet from 2010−2017. Inte…

  • Incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease in children with commercial insurance or Medicaid coverage in the United States before and after the introduction of 7- and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate …

Open Access•Tianyan Hu, Yan Song et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

IRs of IPD decreased from 1998 to 2018, following introduction of PCV7 and PCV13, with larger declines during the early PCV7 and early PCV13 periods, and among younger children. However, the residual burden of IPD remains substantial. The impact of future PCVs on IPD IRs will depend on the proportion of vaccine-type serotypes and vaccine effectiveness in children with underlying conditions

  • Sex differences in the development of mild cognitive impairment and probable Alzheimer’s disease as predicted by hippocampal volume or white matter hyperintensities

Shanna L Burke, Tianyan Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•2019

This study examined biological sex differences in the development of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) development as predicted by changes in the hippocampus or white matter hyperintensities. A secondary data analysis of the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center Uniform Data Set was conducted. We selected samples of participants with normal cognition at baseline who progressed to MCI (n = 483) and those who …

  • Treatment of Sleep Disturbance May Reduce the Risk of Future Probable Alzheimer’s Disease

Open Access•Shanna L Burke, Tianyan Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2018•References: 1

Our findings support the emerging link between sleep disturbance and AD. Our findings also suggest a continued need to elucidate the mechanisms that offer protective factors against AD development

  • Self-reported Health Status Differs for Amazon’s Mechanical Turk Respondents Compared With Nationally Representative Surveys

    Karoline Mortensen, Manuel G Alcalá et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2018•References: 11

BACKGROUND: Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) platform has become a data source for peer-reviewed academic research publications, with over 24,000 Google Scholar search results. Although well-developed and supportive in other disciplines, the literature in health and medicine comparing results from samples generated on MTurk to gold standard, nationally representative health and medical surveys is beginning to emerge. OBJECTIVE: To compare the dem…

  • Medicaid Managed Care in Florida and Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Preventable Emergency Department Visits

Tianyan Hu, Karoline Mortensen et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2018•References: 29

BACKGROUND: In an effort to address health care spending growth, coordinate care, and improve access to primary care in the Medicaid program, Florida implemented the Statewide Mandatory Managed Care (SMMC) program in May of 2014. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of implementation of mandatory managed care in Medicaid on the preventable emergency department (ED) utilizations, with a focus on racial/ethnic minori…
