Racial and ethnic disparities in Covid-19 booster vaccination among U.S. older adults differ by geographic region and Medicare enrollment
Introduction: COVID-19 booster vaccines are highly effective at reducing severe illness and death from COVID-19. Research is needed to identify whether racial and ethnic disparities observed for the primary series of the COVID-19 vaccines persist for booster vaccinations and how those disparities may vary by other characteristics. We aimed to measure racial and ethnic differences in booster vaccine receipt among U.S. Medicare beneficiaries and ch…
Cluster Analysis
Objectives: We sought to identify patterns of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KABs) about influenza and influenza vaccination among healthcare personnel (HCP) and define characteristics associated with these patterns. Methods: We used an Internet panel survey of HCP (N = 2265) during March 27-April 17, 2018; clustered HCP by their vaccination-related KABs. Results: Four clusters were identified: Immunization Champions (61.1% of the sample) r…

The Influence of Multimorbidity on Leading Causes of Death in Older Adults With Cognitive Impairment
Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship of leading causes of death with gradients of cognitive impairment and multimorbidity. Method: This is a population-based study using data from the linked 1992-2010 Health and Retirement Study and National Death Index ( n = 9,691). Multimorbidity is defined as a combination of chronic conditions, functional limitations, and geriatric syndromes. Regression trees and Random Forest iden…
Racial Inequities in Receipt of Influenza Vaccination Among Long-term Care Residents Within and Between Facilities in Michigan
BACKGROUND: Although influenza vaccination is recommended for all nursing home residents and is covered by Medicare, racial inequities remain. OBJECTIVES: To determine the extent of racial difference in influenza vaccination among nursing home residents within and between nursing facilities by facility resident racial composition in a state with a large White-Black difference in vaccination. RESEARCH DESIGN: Data from the Centers for Medicaid & M…
Chronic stress alters the immune response to influenza virus vaccine in older adults.
To determine whether a chronic stressor (caregiving for a spouse with a progressive dementia) is associated with an impaired immune response to influenza virus vaccination, we compared 32 caregivers' vaccine responses with those of 32 sex-, age-, and socioeconomically matched control subjects. Caregivers showed a poorer antibody response following vaccination relative to control subjects as assessed by two independent methods, ELISA and hemagglut…

Aging and immunity in nonhuman primates
Immunity declines with advancing age. Lymphocyte proliferation, natural killer cell activity, and antibody response to tetanus toxoid vaccination were evaluated in cohorts of rhesus monkeys ( Macaca mulatta ) aged 2–36 years in order to characterize senescent changes in immune function. The results were analyzed in accordance with host age. Lymphocyte proliferation was generally low in older monkeys, especially males. Lymphocytes from old male mo…
