Suicide Rates by Age and Time Among American Indian and Alaskan Native Veterans
OBJECTIVE: Although recent work has highlighted high rates of suicide among American Indian and Alaska Native individuals who served in the US military, to date, a comprehensive evaluation of age-specific suicide rates, over time, has yet to be conducted. METHODS: Population-based retrospective cohort study. Average annual suicide rates (2005-2020) were computed. The cohort included 207,955 Native Veterans who were alive as of January 1, 2005, an…
The unique association of posttraumatic stress disorder with hypertension among veterans
PTSD diagnosis and symptom severity are uniquely associated with hypertension, independent of MDD or depressive symptom severity. These results support previous findings that PTSD might be a modifiable risk factor for the prevention and treatment of hypertension. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
Morally injurious combat events as an indirect risk factor for postconcussive symptoms among veterans
Findings offer preliminary support for responses to MIEs being a modifiable risk factor for PCS among veterans. Interventions designed to foster veterans' recovery by targeting the unique emotions and beliefs associated with MIEs may be indicated. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
A practical guide to random-effects Bayesian meta-analyses with application to the psychological trauma and suicide literature
Our hope is that this tutorial, along with the provided data and code, facilitate the use of Bayesian meta-analyses in the study of psychological trauma. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Promote Recovery from suicidal crises
Institutional betrayal and help-seeking among women survivors of military sexual trauma
Women veterans experience disproportionately high rates of military sexual trauma (MST). Nonetheless, many MST survivors delay or forgo health care, particularly within Veterans Health Administration (VHA) settings. Institutional betrayal (IB) has been posited as a potential explanation for this. The current study examined if IB was associated with women veterans' willingness to seek VHA and non-VHA mental health and medical care, prior use of VHA…
Gender Differences in Lifetime Prevalence and Onset Timing of Suicidal Ideation and Suicide Attempt Among Post-9/11 Veterans and Nonveterans
BACKGROUND: Rising US suicide rates are particularly notable among military veterans, especially women. It is unknown whether these differences extend to suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA), which are major predictors of suicide. Literature comparing SI and SA prevalence and timing of onset between veterans and nonveterans is limited. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to estimate and compare SI and SA prevalence and onset ti…
Interpersonal Violence Throughout the Lifespan
BACKGROUND: Female veterans experience interpersonal violence (ie, physical and sexual violence) more often than male veterans and nonveteran females. There is limited knowledge of types of interpersonal violence across the lifespan in relation to suicidal ideation and suicide attempt. Prior research has also focused on those accessing the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) care. OBJECTIVE: This study examined if physical and sexual violence at…
Responses to Traumatic Brain Injury Screening Questions and Suicide Attempts among Those Seeking Veterans Health Administration Mental Health Services
Those with a positive TBI screen at mental health intake had a higher proportion of SBRs than those who screened negative for TBI. Findings provided further psychometric support for the TBI-4. Moreover, results suggest the inclusion of this screen could prove to be helpful in identifying those who may be at risk for future suicide attempt within 1-year post screening
A Factor Analysis and Exploration of Attitudes and Beliefs Toward Complementary and Conventional Medicine in Veterans
BACKGROUND: Although Veterans utilize complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) at rates comparable with civilians, little is known about Veterans' attitudes and beliefs toward CAM. Measures to increase such knowledge may help to identify treatment preferences, particularly among those with signature conditions from the recent conflicts [ie, traumatic brain injury (TBI), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)]. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study …
The role of value importance and success in understanding suicidal ideation among Veterans
Challenges Associated With Screening for Traumatic Brain Injury Among US Veterans Seeking Homeless Services
We identified the prevalence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) among homeless veterans and assessed the TBI–4, a screening tool created to identify TBI history. Between May 2010 and October 2011, 800 US veterans from two hospitals, one eastern (n = 122) and one western (n = 678) completed some or all measures. Findings suggested that 47% of veterans seeking homeless services had a probable history of TBI (data for prevalence obtained only at the we…
