Trauma, Change in Strength of Religious Faith, and Mental Health Service Use Among Veterans Treated for PTSD
One of the most pervasive effects of traumatic exposure is the challenge that people experience to their existential beliefs concerning the meaning and purpose of life. Particularly at risk is the strength of their religious faith and the comfort that they derive from it. The purpose of this study is to examine a model of the interrelationships among veterans' traumatic exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), guilt, social functioning, ch…
Black and Hispanic Veterans in Intensive VA Treatment Programs for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
OBJECTIVES: This study examines differences in treatment process and outcomes among minority veterans treated in specialized intensive VA programs for war-related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). DESIGN: A concurrent panel study assessing four different types of intensive PTSD treatment program. SUBJECTS: Black (n = 2,906; 23.4%), Hispanic (n = 661, 5.3%), and white veterans. Impact of Efforts to Reduce Inpatient Costs on Clinical Effectiveness
BACKGROUND: There have been major reductions in the availability of inpatient psychiatric care in the United States in recent years. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical impact of cost-cutting changes in the delivery of inpatient psychiatric care. DESIGN: This was a nonequivalent control group pre/post design. SUBJECTS: Outcome data on 6,397 veterans treated between 1993 and 2000 at 35 specialized VA inpatient and r…
Assessing Quality of Care
BACKGROUND: Although the use of quality of care indicators based on data collected for administrative purposes has become widespread, the relationship between those measures and clinical outcomes has yet to be evaluated. RESEARCH DESIGN: This study used hierarchical linear modeling to examine the relationship between 12 performance indicators derived from administrative data sets and 6 clinical outcome measures addressing symptoms, substance abus…

Type A behavior pattern, inhibited power motivation, and activity inhibition
The constructs of the Type A behavior pattern and the Inhibited Power Motive Syndrome (IPMS) have many features in common. The empirical relation between the two constructs was investigated in this study with 45 employed, male medical and surgical patients. Four different measures of the Type A pattern were examined. Results showed that, of the four measures, the Structured Interview and the Hostility Scale were related significantly to the IPMS.…
Psychological Impairment and Psychological Health in the Psychological Well-Being of the Physically Ill
There has been a growing acceptance of the view that psychological health is not merely the absence of psychological impairment, but rather is a separate state making its own contribution to a person's overall psychological well-being. Research on the separation of positive and negative affect represents a major empirical development of this view. The present study supports the model as it has been developed from people's self-reports. However, t…
A Computer Program for Assessing Specific Category Rater Agreement for Qualitative Data
This program computes specific category agreement levels for both nominally and ordinally scaled data. For ordinally scaled data, an option is available for collapsing the original scale to a smaller number of categories, with the goal of improving the level of inter-rater reliability for the rating scale
The University as a System with Competing Constituencies
The university is viewed as a political system with interlocking and competing constituencies. Several variables were investigated in order to examine the relative importance of different bases for determining allegiances and divisions within the university. Role group (student, faculty, and administration) and ideology emerged as the two major predictors of the three dependent domains: attitudes toward campus issues, self-images, and the types o…

Machiavellianism and manipulation in the mental patient role 1
S ummary Patients’ Machiavellian orientations were compared to their reputations among the staff as manipulators, helpers, or model patients. For both acute and chronic patients, Machiavellianism was consistently found to relate significantly to the manipulator reputation and not to the other reputations The relationships held for patients diagnosed psychotic as well as nonpsychotic. These findings support the propositions that mental patients at…
Persistence of Ethnic Stereotypes and the Relative Importance of Positive and Negative Stereotyping for Association Preferences
The stereotyping of 10 ethnic groups by American college students over a 30-yr. period was examined by comparing data from 1932, 1950, and 1961. There was much variation among the time periods but persisting, “core” stereotypes were found for 8 of the groups. Evaluative stereotyping was highly related to preferences for association with ethnic group members in both 1932 and 1961. Subdivision of evaluative stereotyping into its positive and negati…
