Validating the New Primary Care Measure in the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey
BACKGROUND: The advancement of primary care research requires reliable and validated measures that capture primary care processes embedded within nationally representative datasets. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the validity of a newly developed measure of primary care processes [Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS)-PC] with preliminary evidence of moderate to excellent reliability. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort s…
Developing a New Measure of Primary Care Using the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey
OBJECTIVE: To develop and assess the reliability of a measure of primary care using items from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), a US representative survey of community-dwelling persons. METHODS: On the basis of the domains from the literature on primary care characteristics, we identified relevant items within the 2013-2014 MEPS family of surveys. In a sample of primary survey respondents with at least 1 office-based physician visit i…
The Influence of Multimorbidity on Leading Causes of Death in Older Adults With Cognitive Impairment
Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship of leading causes of death with gradients of cognitive impairment and multimorbidity. Method: This is a population-based study using data from the linked 1992-2010 Health and Retirement Study and National Death Index ( n = 9,691). Multimorbidity is defined as a combination of chronic conditions, functional limitations, and geriatric syndromes. Regression trees and Random Forest iden…
Long-Term-Care Placement and Survival of Persons With Alzheimer's Disease
Although long-term-care (LTC) placement may shorten the survival of persons with Alzheimer's disease, studies have not examined whether the timing of placement matters. A sample of 258 persons with Alzheimer's disease and their family caregivers was used in a Cox survival model that included care-recipient impairments, caregiver characteristics, and LTC placement as covariates. Placement was associated with shortened survival, but the later the p…
Pragmatic and Internal Validity Issues in Sampling in Caregiver Studies
Regardless of sampling frame, standard task-based inclusion criteria to define caregivers may enhance validity
A Longitudinal Study of the Relationship Between Levels of Depression Among Persons With Alzheimer's Disease and Levels of Depression Among Their Family Caregivers
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects, over time, of depressive symptoms in persons with Alzheimer's disease on depression in their family caregivers. In a sample of 353 patients and caregivers, multilevel longitudinal analysis was used to accommodate an observational design in which the number of observation points and the intervals between points varied across caregivers. The rate of change (increase) in caregiver depression was …
Patterns of Coping in Black Working Women
This study examined the replicability of the factor patterns of the Lazarus Revised Ways of Coping Scale on a sample of 191 black working women aged 22 to 64 years (M = 37.8, SD = 10.8) in a community in the southeastern United States. The majority of the women worked as clerks and service workers in one agency. The scale was administered individually and the items analyzed using alpha and confirmatory principal components analysis with oblique r…
