  • The effects of school shootings on risky behavior, health, and human capital

    Open Access•Partha Deb, Anjelica Gangaram•ARTICLE•Journal of Population Economics•2024•References: 1

We examine the effect of school shootings on risky health behaviors, health, and human capital outcomes of exposed students as adults and on their migration during middle and high school and a few years beyond. We use shootings data compiled by the Center for Homeland Defense and Security along with 2003–2012 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data to examine risky behaviors, health, and human capital outcomes, and the 2004–2018 American …

  • Does Early Follow-Up Improve the Outcomes of Sepsis Survivors Discharged to Home Health Care

    Partha Deb, Christopher M Murtaugh et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2019•References: 31

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence to guide the care of over a million sepsis survivors following hospital discharge despite high rates of hospital readmission. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether early home health nursing (first visit within 2 days of hospital discharge and at least 1 additional visit in the first posthospital week) and early physician follow-up (an outpatient visit in the first posthospital week) reduce 30-day readmissions among M…

  • Twopm

Open Access•Federico Belotti, Partha Deb et al.•ARTICLE•The Stata Journal: Promoting…•2015

In this article, we describe twopm, a command for fitting two-part models for mixed discrete-continuous outcomes. In the two-part model, a binary choice model is fit for the probability of observing a positive-versus-zero outcome. Then, conditional on a positive outcome, an appropriate regression model is fit for the positive outcome. The twopm command allows the user to leverage the capabilities of predict and margins to calculate predictions an…

  • Medicare Spending and Outcomes After Postacute Care for Stroke and Hip Fracture

Melinda Beeuwkes Buntin, Carrie H Colla et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2010•References: 31

BACKGROUND: Elderly patients who leave an acute care hospital after a stroke or a hip fracture may be discharged home, or undergo postacute rehabilitative care in an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) or skilled nursing facility (SNF). Because 15% of Medicare expenditures are for these types of postacute care, it is important to understand their relative costs and the health outcomes they produce. OBJECTIVE: To assess Medicare payments for a…

  • Private Insurance, Selection, and Health Care Use

Partha Deb, Murat K Munkin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2006

Observed differences in medical utilization between the privately insured and uninsured reflect the combined effects of self-selection and insurance incentives (moral hazard). This article provides a Bayesian framework for decomposing the disparity into incentive and selection components. The effect of self-selection in private insurance on the number of doctor visits is estimated using a multiyear sample of the U.S. adult non-Medicare population…

  • Adjusting for Patient Characteristics and Selection Effects in Assessment of Community Mental Health Centers

    Partha Deb, Ann M Holmes et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2004•References: 10

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of patient socioeconomic characteristics and center selection of patients on measured performance of community mental health centers. DATA SOURCE/STUDY SETTING: Data were taken from the administrative records of Indiana's public mental health system for 16,516 adults with severe, persistent mental illness treated in 30 community mental health centers. Center performance was compar…
