Factors Influencing Health-Related Practices Among Hispanic Parents: A Formative Study to Inform Childhood Obesity Prevention
Background : Childhood obesity disproportionately affects Hispanic families in the U.S. Although parenting practices and interventions appear to be viable approaches to lower the risk of childhood obesity, there is limited information on which parenting practices would be relevant and culturally appropriate for Hispanic families. This study aimed to document the health-related factors that impact Hispanic parenting practices to inform evidence-ba…
Pozole, Patasca, and More: Lessons in Representation, Trust and Diversity from Hispanic Research Recruitment
Hispanic families in the U.S. remain underrepresented in health intervention research, despite facing disproportionately high rates of childhood obesity. The objective of this “Report from the Field” is to document the lessons learned from recruiting Hispanic parents for a formative research study on health-related parenting practices to lower the risk for childhood obesity. Guided by a community-engaged research approach, we partnered with a loc…
Barriers, facilitators, and opportunities to promote healthy weight behaviors among preschool-aged children in two rural U.S communities
Rural areas experience multiple challenges that make it difficult for children/families to engage in healthy weight behaviors. This study highlights several assets (existing programs/resources, expertise within communities) that can be leveraged as facilitators. Findings will guide the study team in developing a child obesity prevention intervention for the two rural communities
Community Engagement in Implementation Science: The Impact of Community Engagement Activities in the DecipheR Alliance
Community engagement can improve the implementation of evidence-based interventions across diverse settings, improving intervention effectiveness in underserved communities and furthering health equity
A Cost Analysis of Rethink the Strip: De-implementing a Low-value Practice in Primary Care
BACKGROUND: Routine self-monitoring of blood glucose is a low-value practice that provides limited benefit for patients with non-insulin-treated type 2 diabetes mellitus. OBJECTIVES: We estimated the costs of Rethink the Strip (RTS), a multistrategy approach to the de-implementation of self-monitoring of blood glucose in primary care. RESEARCH DESIGN: RTS was conducted among 20 primary care clinics in North Carolina. We estimated the non-site-bas…
Experiences pertaining to child nutrition and care provision among early care and education stakeholders, sponsors, and center directors during the Covid-19 pandemic: A multi-method study
Purpose: This study used multiple methods (interviews, survey) to assess experiences of stakeholders, sponsors, and center-based early care and education (ECE) program directors pertaining to child nutrition (e.g., provision of nutritious foods, mealtime practices, CACFP administration/use) and the provision of child-care (i.e., day-to-day ECE operations and programming) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Participants included stakeholders fr…

Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America Partners Patient-Powered Research Network: Patient Perspectives on Facilitators and Barriers to Building an Impactful Patient-Powered Research Network
BACKGROUND: To build a Patient-Powered Research Networks (PPRN) that prioritizes the needs of its members who have inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), we sought to better understand patients' preferences for what are the essential features that will facilitate and sustain engagement. METHODS: We conducted a two-phase qualitative study. Seven focus groups involving 62 participants with IBD were conducted (phase 1). Focus group results informed the …
Feasibility and acceptability of a Mediterranean-style diet intervention to reduce cardiovascular risk for low income Hispanic American women
Intervention engagement and acceptability were high and there was improvement in self-reported dietary behaviors. This type of Med-style dietary pattern intervention should be evaluated in randomized trials enrolling HAs at risk for CVD
A Community Assessment to Inform a Multilevel Intervention to Reduce Cardiovascular Disease Risk and Risk Disparities in a Rural Community
To complete a formative evaluation to identify community-level assets and barriers to healthy lifestyle choices, we conducted qualitative interviews, community audits, and secondary data analyses. We solicited local leaders' perspectives regarding winnability of obesity prevention policy options. Participants noted that many resources were available, yet a barrier was high cost. There were more parks per capita in low-income areas, but they were …
Engaging Tribal Leaders in an American Indian Healthy Eating Project Through Modified Talking Circles
Frequently used in the American Indian (AI) community and proven to be a valuable tool in health research, a talking circle is a method used by a group to discuss a topic in an egalitarian and nonconfrontational manner. Using community-based participatory research, a modified Talking Circle format was developed for engaging tribal leaders in an American Indian Healthy Eating Project in North Carolina. The culturally informed formative research ap…
