  • Registries and Administrative Data

    L L Roos, Cameron A Mustard et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1993

In this article the organization and accuracy of the population registry and administrative data base in Manitoba, Canada are discussed. The overall data management strategy and a framework for analyzing the accuracy of such data are presented. The generally high quality of the Manitoba registry file (necessary to track individuals over time) and the hospital claims is supported by comparisons with other data sources. Hospital claims' main qualit…

  • The accuracy of Medicare's hospital claims data

    E S Fisher, Fredrick S Whaley et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•Cited by: 98•References: 25

BACKGROUND. Health care databases provide a widely used source of data for health care research, but their accuracy remains uncertain. We analyzed data from the 1985 National DRG Validation Study, which carefully reabstracted and reassigned ICD-9-CM diagnosis and procedure codes from a national sample of 7050 medical records, to determine whether coding accuracy had improved since the Institute of Medicine studies of the 1970s and to assess the c…

  • Studying Outcomes and Hospital Utilization in the Elderly

Craig Fleming, Elliott S Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1992

That veterans aged 65 years and older are eligible to receive care either in the Veteran Affairs (VA) health care system or in the private sector under Medicare confounds the analysis of veterans' health services utilization and outcomes in two ways. First, changes in eligibility or financial barriers to access with regard to either system influence veterans' decisions about where to seek needed care. Second, analyses of VA care for elderly veter…

  • Overcoming potential pitfalls in the use of Medicare data for epidemiologic research

    E S Fisher, John A Baron et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Cited by: 18•References: 10

We used Medicare data bases and US Census data to address two questions critical to the use of Medicare files for epidemiologic research. First, we examined the degree to which the population enrolled in the Medicare program is similar to the elderly resident population of the United States, as estimated by the US Census. We found small differences in the total population estimates but substantial differences by age and race. Second, we found tha…

  • Risk of carotid endarterectomy in the elderly

    E S Fisher, DAVID J MALENKA et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1989•Cited by: 3•References: 28

We used the Medicare claims files to describe operative mortality for 2,089 New England residents over the age of 65 who underwent carotid endarterectomy in 1984 and 1985. For patients ages 65 to 69, the risk of death within 30 days of surgery was 1.1 percent, (95% confidence interval = 0.5, 2.1), for those ages 70 to 74, 2.8 percent (1.7, 4.4), for those ages 75 to 79, 3.2 percent (1.8, 5.2), and for those over age 80, 4.7 percent (2.3, 8.5). Ne…
