  • Peripheral visions

    Open Access•D Power, Patrick Collins•ARTICLE•Industry and Innovation•2021

This paper attempts to blur the periphery versus centre binary by considering the emergence of a small, but vibrant, agglomeration of cultural industries in Galway, Ireland. Key agents in this story include postcolonial activists, Irish language supporters, Hollywood directors, and local politicians. This is an example of an industry agglomeration in a ‘peripheral’ setting and in the context of a threatened language. Language, culture and communi…

  • Attentional Social Media

    Open Access•Ate Poorthuis, D Power et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the American…•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 34

In this article we use big data methods to analyze the attention paid to the fashion industry on social media. The article argues that for the fashion industry, like many industries, the core product is a form of knowledge that is dependent on gaining and holding people’s attention. To understand this attentional economy, social media offers a unique window because it is increasingly a central space within which fashion knowledge is created and s…

  • Geographies of dissociation

Open Access•Oliver Ibert, Martin Heß et al.•ARTICLE•Dialogues in Human Geography•2019•Cited by: 29•References: 40

In this article, we seek to contribute to cultural-economic geography debates on the social construction of economic value. We widen the focus on already well-studied associations between branded commodities and other entities representing nonmonetary values by also considering what we refer to as ‘dissociations’. Dissociation denotes practices of weakening or obscuring negative links between a branded commodity and other entities in order to let…

  • Positioning and ‘doing’ geographies of dissociation

Open Access•Oliver Ibert, Martin Heß et al.•ARTICLE•Dialogues in Human Geography•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Inspired by five commentaries on our forum article, in this response article we elaborate on three points related to geographies of dissociation, namely positioning dissociation, dealing with plurality and moving from agenda-setting to empirical research. In order to assess the validity of critique elaborated in the commentaries, we specify the contribution we seek to make. Geographies of dissociation aim to contribute to a strand of cultural eco…

  • The Immersive Internet

    D Power, Robin Teigland•BOOK•The Immersive Internet•2013

The internet has begun to develop into a much more immersive and multi-dimensional space. Three dimensional spaces and sites of interaction have not just gripped our attention but have begun to weave or be woven into the fabric of our professional and social lives. The Immersive Internet including social media, augmented reality, virtual worlds, online games, 3D internet and beyond is still nascent, but is moving towards a future where communicat…

  • Smoking Typewriters

    D Power, David Powers•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2011•Cited by: 13

Smoking Typewriters opens with what has been mythologized as the 1960s denouement: that ill-fated Rolling Stones concert at the Altamont Speedway in December 1969 which brought to a dramatic end not only the life of one unlucky concertgoer but also, it is said, the revolutionary hopes of a generation. But as John McMillian soon reveals in his brisk and illuminating book, even this most durable of parables has a specific, self-conscious origin—sto…

  • The contribution of universities to innovation and economic development

    D Power, A Malmberg•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2008•Cited by: 9•References: 11

To explore the contradictions and problems apparent in contemporary policy towards universities, this article reviews two parallel but related debates: the debate about competitive and prosperous regions and the debate about excellent institutions of research and higher education. It questions whether it is necessary, or always healthy, to conflate the processes behind excellence in regional innovation and economic development with excellence in …

  • Competitiveness, Local Production Systems and Global Commodity Chains in the Music Industry

    D Power, Dominic Power And et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2007•Cited by: 16•References: 10

This article is based on the results of interviews with music industry actors in the USA, and several other countries, that examined the industry, distribution and retail structures controlling ‘foreign’ music’s access to the world’s largest music markets. The paper uses the US market in order to demonstrate and trace the principal channels and barriers that determine the conditions of market access for a musical product. It is shown that music d…

  • The Characteristics and Extent of Participation of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students in Regular Classes in Australian Schools

D Power, Des Power•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2002

A national randomly selected survey of a sample of deaf and hard-of-hearing students included in regular classes from kindergarten to high school in Australian preschools and schools was conducted via a questionnaire to itinerant teachers working with such students. This article reports the analysis of a questionnaire that surveyed the demographic characteristics of such students and a set of characteristics of their behavior in their placement i…

  • Principles and Practices of Literacy Development for Deaf Learners

D Power, Des Power•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2000

Since the very beginning of formal approaches to deaf education, the development of literacy has been a priority issue. The history of educational initiatives in this area is entwined with the history of prevailing attitudes and practices toward the impact of deafness on the development of deaf children more generally. In particular, arguments about whether a visual input (reading) can take the place of a diminished auditory input and whether edu…
