Little is known about factors influencing hesitancy among U.S. military Veterans later in the pandemic. This study was part of the COVID-19 Vaccine Acceptance…
Veterans Health Administration Screening for Military Sexual Trauma May Not Capture Over Half of Cases Among Midlife Women Veterans
Telephone veteran peer coaching for mental health treatment engagement among rural veterans
PURPOSE: To determine the effectiveness of telephone motivational coaching delivered by veteran peers to improve mental health (MH) treatment engagement among veterans. METHODS: Veterans receiving primary care from primarily rural VA community-based outpatient clinics were enrolled. Veterans not engaged in MH treatment screening positive for ≥1 MH problem(s) were randomized to receive veteran peer-delivered feedback on MH screen results and refer…

Tailored to Fit
BACKGROUND: Veterans Affairs (VA) has rolled out a holistic, multicomponent Whole Health care model nationwide, yet no pragmatic trials have been conducted in real-world clinical settings to compare its effectiveness against other evidence-based approaches for chronic pain management in veterans. OBJECTIVES: We describe the adaptation of the first large pragmatic randomized controlled trial of the Whole Health model for chronic pain care for dive…
Timing of evidence-based psychotherapy for posttraumatic stress disorder initiation among Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans in the Veterans Health Administration
Most veterans in our study did not initiate CPT/PE. Generally, clinical complexity variables increased likelihood of initiating CPT/PE and initiating CPT/PE more than 1 year after first mental health visit. Additional research is needed to understand whether CPT/PE delay results from receipt of alternative intervention due to clinical complexity variables. Beyond the Revolving Door
In this study, we undertook a narrative analysis of participants' long-term lived experience of eating disorders and specialist service provision. Eight participants were recruited with service experience across five National Health Service (NHS) Trusts in the United Kingdom. All participants had a minimum of 10 years self-reported experience living with an eating disorder. The data are presented across different temporal stages that demonstrate …

Pre‐Implementation Strategies to Adapt and Implement a Veteran Peer Coaching Intervention to Improve Mental Health Treatment Engagement Among Rural Veterans
PURPOSE: Telephone motivational coaching has been shown to increase urban veteran mental health treatment initiation. However, no studies have tested telephone motivational coaching delivered by veteran peers to facilitate mental health treatment initiation and engagement. This study describes pre-implementation strategies with 8 Veterans Affairs (VA) community-based outpatient clinics in the West and Mid-South United States to adapt and implemen…
Reproductive and Other Health Outcomes in Iraq and Afghanistan Women Veterans Using VA Health Care
Eating Disorders and Psychiatric Comorbidity among Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans
Gender Differences in Military Sexual Trauma and Mental Health Diagnoses among Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Gender Differences in Mental Health Diagnoses Among Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Enrolled in Veterans Affairs Health Care
Objectives. We examined gender differences in sociodemographic, military service, and mental health characteristics among Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) veterans. We evaluated associations between these sociodemographic and service characteristics and depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnoses. Methods. In a retrospective, cross-sectional study, we used univariate descriptive statistics and l…
Trends and Risk Factors for Mental Health Diagnoses Among Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Using Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care, 2002–2008
Objectives. We sought to investigate longitudinal trends and risk factors for mental health diagnoses among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. Methods. We determined the prevalence and predictors of mental health diagnoses among 289 328 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans entering Veterans Affairs (VA) health care from 2002 to 2008 using national VA data. Results. Of 289 328 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, 106 726 (36.9%) received mental health diagnoses; 6…
Getting Beyond “Don’t Ask; Don’t Tell”
Objectives. We sought to evaluate outcomes of the Veterans Administration (VA) Afghan and Iraq Post-Deployment Screen for mental health symptoms. Methods. Veterans Administration clinicians were encouraged to refer Iraq or Afghanistan veterans who screened positive for posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, or high-risk alcohol use to a VA mental health clinic. Multivariate methods were used to determine predictors of screening, the proportio…
Seal Et Al. Respond
We appreciate Rona’s concerns about population-based mental health screening of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans presenting to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities. The study population included veterans presenting to all outpatient clinics at 1 VA facility, not just primary care. Mental health screening may not have been a clinical priority during medical subspecialty visits, which may partially explain lower screening rates. Rece…
Bringing the War Back Home
BACKGROUND: Veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) have endured high combat stress and are eligible for 2 years of free military service-related health care through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system, yet little is known about the burden and clinical circumstances of mental health diagnoses among OEF/OIF veterans seen at VA facilities. METHODS: US veterans separated from OEF/OIF military servic…

Predictors and Prevention of Nonfatal Overdose Among Street-Recruited Injection Heroin Users in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1998–1999
Objectives. This study sought to determine prevalence of and risk factors for nonfatal recent overdose among street-recruited injection heroin users. Methods. From August 1998 through July 1999, 1427 heroin injectors were recruited from 6 inner-city neighborhoods in the San Francisco Bay Area, Calif, and interviewed. Factors hypothesized to be associated with recent overdose were analyzed with logistic regression. Results. Of the 1427 participant…
