  • Epidemiology, Immunology and Clinical Characteristics of Covid-19 (Epic3)—Database of a prospective longitudinal observational study within the Veterans Health Administration

Open Access•Liuye Huang, Xumin Li et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

The health burden caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection has been devastating nationally and internationally (1,2). Over the past 4 years, much research has been conducted to characterize the clinical trajectory of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection and to identify risk/prognostic factors for infection and disease severity, respectively (3)(4)(5)(6). Despite the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency declaration in the U.S. (7) and globally (8) in May 2023,…

  • Public health surveillance in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

    Open Access•Cynthia Lucero-Obusan, Cynthia Lucero‐Obusan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Background Early threat detection and situational awareness are vital to achieving a comprehensive and accurate view of health-related events for federal, state, and local health agencies. Key to this are public health and syndromic surveillance systems that can analyze large data sets to discover patterns, trends, and correlations of public health significance. In 2020, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) evaluated its public health surveillance…

  • Exposure Sources Among Veterans With Elevated Blood Lead Levels, United States, 2015‒2021

Gina Oda, Aditya Sharma et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2022•References: 20

Objectives. To determine characteristics and sources of exposure in veterans with elevated blood lead levels (BLLs). Methods. We included users of US Veterans Health Administration care aged 18 years or older tested for BLL from October 2015 to September 2021. Prevalence of BLL 10 micrograms per deciliter (μg/dL) or higher and 25 μg/dL or higher was determined within demographic groups. Logistic regression analysis measured association of Interna…

  • Adapting the Surveillance Platform for Enteric and Respiratory Infectious Organisms at United States Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (Supernova) for Covid-19 Among Hospitalized Adults

Open Access•Elissa Meites, Kristina L Bajema et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Introduction: Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) rapidly initiated COVID-19 surveillance by leveraging existing hospital networks to assess disease burden among hospitalized inpatients and inform prevention efforts. Materials and Methods: The Surveillance Platform for Enteric and Respiratory Infectious Organisms at Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (SUPERNOVA) is a network of five United States Vet…

  • Carbon monoxide poisoning surveillance in the Veterans Health Administration, 2010–2017

Open Access•Gina Oda, Russell Ryono et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Our findings support the use of ICD-coded data for targeted CO poisoning surveillance, however, improvements are needed in ICD coding to reduce the percentage of cases coded with unknown injury intent and/or CO poisoning source. Prevalence of CO poisoning among Veterans is consistent with other U.S. estimates. Since most cases are unintentional, opportunities exist for provider and patient education to reduce risk

  • Public Health Practice Is Not Research

Jean Lin Otto, Mark Holodniy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•References: 13

Scientific and clinical activities undertaken by public health agencies may be misconstrued as medical research. Most discussions of regulatory and legal oversight of medical research focus on activities involving either patients in clinical practice or volunteers in clinical trials. These discussions often exclude similar activities that constitute or support core functions of public health practice. As a result, public health agencies and pract…

  • Determinants of the Cost of Health Services Used by Veterans With HIV

Paul G Barnett, Adam Chow et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2011

BACKGROUND: The effect of adherence, treatment failure, and comorbidities on the cost of HIV care is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the cost of HIV care including combination antiretroviral treatment (ART). RESEARCH DESIGN: Observational study of administrative data. SUBJECTS: Total 1896 randomly selected HIV-infected patients and 288 trial participants with multidrug-resistant HIV seen at the US Veterans Health Administration (V…

  • The concurrent validity and responsiveness of the health utilities index (HUI 3) among patients with advanced HIV/Aids

Open Access•Bohdan Nosyk, Huiying Sun et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2009

  • Prevalence of HIV Infection Among Inpatients and Outpatients in Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Systems

Douglas K Owens, Vandana Sundaram et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 14

Objectives. We sought to determine the prevalence of HIV in both inpatient and outpatient settings in 6 Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care sites. Methods. We collected demographic data and data on comorbid conditions and then conducted blinded, anonymous HIV testing. We conducted a multivariate analysis to determine predictors of HIV infection. Results. We tested 4500 outpatient blood specimens and 4205 inpatient blood specimens; 326…

  • The Effect of Diagnosis with HIV Infection on Health-Related Quality of Life

Open Access•Shyoko Honiden, Vandana Sundaram et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2006

  • Adherence to protease inhibitors, HIV-1 viral load, and development of drug resistance in an indigent population

David R Bangsberg, FREDERICK HECHT et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS•2000

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between adherence, viral suppression and antiretroviral resistance in HIV-infected homeless and marginally housed people on protease inhibitor (PI) therapy. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional analysis of subjects in an observational prospective cohort systematically sampled from free meal lines, homeless shelters and low-income, single-room occupancy (SRO) hotels. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-four HIV-infected pe…
