The Role of Ideology in Motivating Lone Actor Terrorism: An Analysis of the Online Record of the Christchurch Terrorist
This article considers how ideology motivates lone actor terrorists to use violence. A significant body of literature in terrorism studies sees ideology as a much less important driver of terrorist action than other phenomena such as personal crisis and status seeking. Yet these studies often reach this conclusion without first defining ideology or how it affects behavior. We adopt a broad understanding of ideology as sets of political worldviews…
Pearl Buck's “Several Worlds” and the “Inasmuch” of Christ
Pearl Buck, born in West Virginia to Presbyterian missionaries, lived most of her early life in China. She introduced Americans to China and the Chinese through her novel The Good Earth (1931) and numerous other writings, which won for her both the Pulitzer and Nobel prizes for literature. She also helped Christians to rethink the meaning and method of the mission enterprise in the 1930s and to understand the conflict under Chaing Kai-shek and Ma…

Appalachian Spring
“We are all Appalachians. We depend on the rich resources of that region for our abundant life, while at the same time we tend to ignore the widespread poverty, the injustices and inequalities, which continue to mark the life of the people. This, then, is a report about some of the literature now available to help us understand the problems of Appalachia, the images and models which underlie our preconceptions, and the place of the Christian fait…

Sheldon's In His Steps: Conscience and Discipleship
“Our purpose here is to retrace Sheldon's In His Steps, to place it theologically within the Christocentric evangelical tradition in which context the author was able to emphasize Jesus as the pattern of Christian life, to examine some cases of conscience within the book and the cost of discipleship for his characters, and to suggest that Sheldon was interested in comprehensive reform programs.”

Clerical Perspectives on Deism: Paine's The Age of Reason in Virginia
THOMAS PAINE has not always enjoyed the best press. Theodore Roosevelt labeled Paine a filthy little atheist. This attack epitomizes much misrepresentation and misunderstanding of the eighteenth-century Deist by Americans. Recent attempts to explain hiim and his approach to religion have not altogether cleared the air.' However, the clergy who attacked Paine after the publication of The Age of Reason have not themselves enjoyed a favorable press.…
The Hidden Agenda in Ben Hur
“It may be that Wallace wrote exactly the kind of apologetic that some Americans in the latter part of the nineteenth century needed, an apologetic which allowed them to have God and Mammon too. Wallace wrote a tale as an opiate for the rich and for all those other Americans who thought that they had a divine calling to make it, even to make it big, in the ‘Great Barbecue.’ They could participate in the struggle not only for existence but also a …

Or 1984: On Celebrating Revolution
In a sense, all citizens of the United States are sons and daughters of the American Revolution, and the sobering thing about cries for law and order in our day is that many citizens seem to forget that revolution is as American as cherry pie. Since many citizens will be drawn into the bicentennial celebrations, the American Revolution offers a valuable point of contact for a discussion of what is now going on throughout the country and the world…

Protestant Clergymen and American Destiny: I. Promise and Judgment, 1781–1800
Americans in “search” of the “goals,” “prospects,” and “purpose” of the United States share an interest in the latter part of the eighteenth century. This was the age of the democratic revolution in Western civilization which produced the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, the Bill of Rights, those primary and permanent legacies paramount to our national existence. Although remote in time this period is the common…
