  • Utilization of Positive and Negative Controls to Examine Comorbid Associations in Observational Database Studies

    Open Access•Jigar R Desai, Jigar Desai et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2017•References: 21

BACKGROUND: Opportunities to leverage observational data for precision medicine research are hampered by underlying sources of bias and paucity of methods to handle resulting uncertainty. We outline an approach to account for bias in identifying comorbid associations between 2 rare genetic disorders and type 2 diabetes (T2D) by applying a positive and negative control disease paradigm. RESEARCH DESIGN: Association between 10 common and 2 rare gen…

  • Cost-Effectiveness Analysis: From Science to Application

    Marc L Berger, Steven M Teutsch et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2005•References: 11

This article proposes ways to improve the credibility and use of cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) in healthcare decision-making. We argue that the major issue is not the credibility of CEA as a methodology; although there are methodologic challenges, they can be addressed. Two issues, however, will require effort on the part of stakeholders to achieve consensus. First, agreement must be reached regarding the standards of evidence required to sup…

  • Aligning Quality for Populations and Patients: Do We Know Which Way to Go

Erica I Lubetkin, Shoshanna Sofaer et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2003•References: 7

Both the medical care and public health systems have invested considerable resources to define, measure, and improve quality and health outcomes. A movement toward accountability has generated performance indicators from the medical arena and “leading health indicators” from the public health arena. The focus on specific conditions by the medical care system has been at odds with public health’s emphasis on improving population health and has per…

  • Stanford Presenteeism Scale: Health Status and Employee Productivity

Cheryl Koopman, Kenneth R Pelletier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational &…•2002

Workforce productivity has become a critical factor in the strength and sustainability of a company's overall business performance. Absenteeism affects productivity; however, even when employees are physically present at their jobs, they may experience decreased productivity and below-normal work quality--a concept known as decreased presenteeism. This article describes the creation and testing of a presenteeism scale evaluating the impact of hea…

  • The Labor Productivity Effects of Chronic Backache in the United States

    John A Rizzo, Thomas A Abbott et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1998•References: 25

OBJECTIVES: Back pain afflicts approximately 31 million Americans, and is the number one cause of activity limitation in young adults. Little is known about the labor productivity costs associated with this chronic disease. Such information could provide useful input to employers considering alternative health benefits plans for managing their employees' health care needs. The goals of this study were to generate employee-level as well as nationa…
