Primal world beliefs and art
This paper reviews prior work in art history about worldviews and the methodological challenges it has faced toward a new engagement in art history with primals theory. After reviewing the individualistic focus of art history and how such a humanistic discipline can hope to connect to a science like psychology, the review discusses early attempts to link art history to worldview. A good deal of time is spent on challenges to the derivation of men…
Cognitive and historical information can spark interest in modern and contemporary art
Modern and contemporary art can be challenging for the general observer. We investigated whether aesthetic appreciation of modern and contemporary artworks can be enhanced through two types of intervention. The first, a traditional approach, provided information related to art history (historical intervention [HI]). The second, novel intervention, encouraged participants to observe the creative elements in the artworks by “thinking in terms of op…
Showing Time: Continuous Pictorial Narrative and the Adam and Eve Story: In Memory of Alberto Argenton
This book provides an in-depth analysis of the perceptual-representational strategies employed by artists from the sixth to the seventeenth century.
Getting Fra Angelico's splotch out: Rehabilitating Visual Cognitive Semiotics
Most contemporary approaches to meaning presume the limitation of semiotics (Didi-Huberman, Gumbrecht, Belting). The question of what kind of "semiotics" is required has not been asked. However, without some general science of meaning it is impossible to reform theory without committing past errors or ignoring progress. In the interest of reconnecting contemporary interests in "presence" to long-evolving needs, I review the ossification and decli…
Right for the wrong reason; wrong for the right reason: Gibson and Arnheim on picture perception
Although J J Gibson’s theory of picture perception was often crude and biased toward naturalism, its fundamental division between the visual world and the visual field made it a semiotic theory. Contrariwise, although Arnheim wrote sensitively on pictures, he never seemed to admit that they were signs. This paper reviews both Gibson’s and Arnheim’s theories of picture perception, and explains where Arnheim’s biases caused him to lose the possibil…
Illusory Planes in Fred Sandback’s Sculpture
A remarkable feature often noted of artist Fred Sandback’s string constructions: The geometrical forms he created with string have a strong planar feel. Phenomenologically, viewers perceive the spaces between the strings as planes with some substance. The illusion is amodally completed, as in the well-known Kanizsa triangle, by minimal prompts, but in three dimensions. Instead of creating an illusory figure, then, Sandback creates illusory planes…

Doing underlaboured theory
This essay connects the two critical realist ideas of underlabouring and meta-theory, making the argument that the process of underlabouring and making ‘disclosure and transformation of the deep categorical structures of science and theory’ (Hostettler) is ideal for clarifying strata of theory (meta-theory, domain-specific theory and methodology) and therefore points of agreement between different practitioners. Using the 1980s debates over femin…

Crying Hegel in Art History
Within cultural history there is a widespread eschewal of speculative reasoning. This article notes the complicity of the general postmodern avoidance of metanarratives with Anglo-Saxon empiricism and locates the major problem facing cultural history in postmodernism's conflation of trajectories and teleologies. Any discussion of the directionality of history is imputed to be a full-blown teleology. Using previous discussions from different field…

The Tactility of Early Cubism
This article takes up this research by qualifying that the complexity of James' theories did not make them immediately applicable to painting practice and nominates instead the simpler theories of Bernard Berenson as the body of ideas about the necessity of touch to inform vision as underlying the earliest efforts of Braque and Picasso. In this way, one is able to better understand the way in which early Cubist critical writing incessantly notes …
Reforming visual semiotics: The dynamic approach
This paper outlines a course for a new visual semiotics based on dynamic versions of semiotics (Thom, PetitotCocorda, Wildgen, Brandt). After considering the way in which visual semiotics functions in art history as a sort of privileged form of interpretation, I argue instead for a dynamic, naturalized project in which semiotic meaning emerges through a complex process of stratified semantic processes. After sketching the new approach, I consider…
Dispositional Realism and the Specificity of Digital Media
Discussions of the specificity of digital media are in a state of fruitful flux. After the dismissal of mediality in the utopian glow of media convergence, new theoretical developments allow us to reconceive this idea. Using the critical realist precept that properties in the world have real dispositions or powers, the author expands this system of thought to provide a framework with which to understand digital media. This is presented to add to …
When Are We Speculating on History? A Mandelbaumian Theory
This paper is a classic critique of speculative philosophies of history based on Maurice Mandelbaum’s work. Unlike the more famous invective by Karl Popper, I argue that Mandelbaum’s is a richer and more interesting approach, which reveals through exposition a deeper unity to Mandelbaum’s work than is normally evident. Because Popper’s nominalism is suspicious of all metaphysics, it loses credibility whereas Mandelbaum placed reflection on the na…
Siting Federico Barocci and the Renaissance Aesthetic
This book appears as a part of Ashgate’s series Visual Culture in Early Modernity. It is an interesting hybrid, part aesthetic reflection and part art-historical monograph. It uses the apparatus of art history and even includes a catalogue at the end, but it aspires principally to enlighten a general period-specific aesthetic. This work has to elbow its way into usage after Stuart Lingo’s well-received Federico Barocci: Allure and Devotion in Lat…
Francesco Paciotti, European geopolitics, and military architecture
Francesco Paciotti (1520–90) was one of the most famous military architects of the sixteenth century, building citadels in Turin and Antwerp and consulting all over Europe. Much of his success has not been properly connected to his descent from an illegitimate son of Giovanni della Rovere (d. 1501) and subsequent attainment of patrician status of the Paciotti clan in their native Urbino. The fact that Paciotti could be taken into confidence by al…

A Critical Realist Perspective on Aesthetic Value
The following article attempts to bring critical realism to bear on the changing nature of aesthetic value. Beginning with the transitive-intransitive distinction, it is advised that we withhold judgment on the possibility of aesthetic judgment, lest we commit the epistemic fallacy. Without hoping to attain a form of aesthetic value absolutism, a strategy of ‘eliminative realism’ is introduced, which seeks to remove false causes of apparent judgm…

Arnheim and Gombrich in Social Scientific Perspective
The two most common names to invoke for a perceptualist aesthetics are Rudolf Arnheim and E. H. Gombrich. But the similaritied and differences between them have never been explicitly drawn. This paper undertakes such an analysis based on the three categories of representation, expression and historical objectivity. Arnheim's less stringent solutions to the problems of representation and expression are applauded but Gombrich's unique attempt to gr…
Gestalt psychology in Italy
Graz gestalt psychology was introduced into Italy after World War I with Vittorio Benussi's emigration to Padua. His earliest adherent, Cesare Musatti, defended Graz theory, but after Benussi's premature death became an adherent of the Berlin gestalt psychology of Wertheimer-Köhler-Koffka. He trained his two most important students, Fabio Metelli and Gaetano Kanizsa, in orthodox Berlin theory. They established rigid "schools" in Padua and Trieste…

The Discovery of Pictorial Composition: Theories of Visual Order in Painting, 1400-1800
In this illuminating book, art historian Thomas Puttfarken examines how pictorial composition and attitudes toward it changed between the early Renaissance and the beginning of the nineteenth century. Before 1600, a painting's overall composition was hardly ever discussed. As far as art theory and criticism were concerned, pictorial composition was a of the seventeenth century, the author explains. In the first part of the book, Puttfarken invest…

Federico Barocci, Federico Borromeo, and the Oratorian Orbit
Federico Barocci (1535-1612) has always held a special place in studies of the patronage of Filippo Neri's Roman Congregation of the Oratory. The problem is how to quantify the affinity between artist and patron without slipping into zeitgeist historicism. A close chronological examination of documents surrounding Barocci's commissions to Oratorians and other patrons like Cardinal Federico Borromeo and Pope Clement VIII shows a coordinated effort…
