The Effect of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Diagnostic Testing Time Completion for African American End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Patients Being Evaluated for Kidney Transplantation
Gatekeeper training for youth suicide prevention
The overriding aim of this study was to conduct a side‐by‐side comparative evaluation of two online suicide prevention gatekeeper‐training programs: Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) and Making Educators Partners in Youth Suicide Prevention (MEP). Specific aims included identifying program components, instructional methods, and technology elements that are well received by school personnel and that increase knowledge and self‐efficacy. QPR and MEP …
Acceptability of a Mobile-Health Living Kidney Donor Advocacy Program for Black Wait-Listed Patients
Marked racial disparities exist in rates of living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT). The Living Organ Video Educated Donors (LOVED) program is a distance-based, mobile health program designed to help Black kidney transplant wait-list patients advocate for a living donor. This study reported on the acceptability outcomes to aid in future refinements. Participants were randomized to LOVED ( n = 24, mean age = 50.9 SD (9.2) years), male = 50%) an…
Feasibility of Motivational Interviewing and Physical Activity Counseling Sessions for Improving Physical Activity Self-Management for Latina Women Either at Risk for or Diagnosed With Type 2 Diabetes…
Introduction: Latinas have a greater chance of dying from diabetes than non-Latina Whites. As a population group, the literature has shown that Latinas do not meet physical activity (PA) guidelines. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient-centered counseling method that promotes self-efficacy for behavior change. The purpose of the study was to examine the feasibility of using MI/PA counseling for self-management of type 2 diabetes mellitus w…
Effect of an Evidence-based Inpatient Tobacco Dependence Treatment Service on 30-, 90-, and 180-Day Hospital Readmission Rates
INTRODUCTION: Smoking is a risk factor for hospitalization and interferes with patient care due to its effects on pulmonary function, wound healing, and interference with treatments and medications. Although benefits of stopping smoking are well-established, few hospitals provide tobacco dependence treatment services (TDTS) due to cost, lack of mandatory tobacco cessation standards and lack of evidence demonstrating clinical and financial benefit…
Effect of an Evidence-based Inpatient Tobacco Dependence Treatment Service on 1-Year Postdischarge Health Care Costs
BACKGROUND: In 2014, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) implemented a Tobacco Dependence Treatment Service (TDTS) consistent with the Joint Commission (JC) standards recommending that hospitals screen patients for smoking, provide cessation support, and follow-up contact for relapse prevention within 1 month of discharge. We previously demonstrated that patients exposed to the MUSC TDTS were approximately half as likely to be smoking…
Chronic Disease Self-Management and Behavior Change Attitudes in Older Adults
The population of older adults with chronic disease is increasing, yet little is known about their perception of chronic disease and self-management. To develop successful and sustainable chronic disease self-management interventions in the older adult population, health care providers must first understand older adults’ attitudes toward health status and behavior change. This pilot study was conducted to determine the feasibility of the study de…
The Association of Individual and Neighborhood Social Cohesion, Stressors, and Crime on Smoking Status Among African-American Women in Southeastern US Subsidized Housing Neighborhoods
The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between individual and neighborhood social contextual factors and smoking prevalence among African-American women in subsidized neighborhoods. We randomly sampled 663 adult women in 17 subsidized neighborhoods in two Southeastern US states. The smoking prevalence among participants was 37.6%, with an estimated neighborhood household prevalence ranging from 30 to 68%. Smokers were more like…
Application of a CBPR Framework to Inform a Multi‐level Tobacco Cessation Intervention in Public Housing Neighborhoods
African American women in urban, high poverty neighborhoods have high rates of smoking, difficulties with quitting, and disproportionate tobacco‐related health disparities. Prior research utilizing conventional “outsider driven” interventions targeted to individuals has failed to show effective cessation outcomes. This paper describes the application of a community‐based participatory research (CBPR) framework to inform a culturally situated, eco…
