Identifying In-Hospital Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)
BACKGROUND: Efforts to identify hospital-acquired complications from claims data by applying exclusion rules to discharge diagnosis codes exhibit low positive predictive value (PPV). The PPV improves when a variable is added to each secondary diagnosis to indicate whether the condition was "present-on-admission" (POA) or "hospital-acquired". Such indicator variables will soon be required for Medicare reimbursement. No estimates are available, how…
Prevalence of total hip replacement
Hip fracture incidence before and after the fluoridation of the public water supply, Rochester, Minnesota
Recent ecological comparison studies have suggested a positive association between fluoridation and hip fracture. Using data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project, we found the incidence of hip fracture for the 10 years before the fluoridation of the Rochester, Minn, public water supply was 484 per 100,000, compared with 450 per 100,000 in the following 10 years. When the effects of calendar time and age were controlled for, the relative risk a…
Breech delivery and cryptorchism
Incidence of Colles' fracture in a North American community
In a 30-year period, 1,137 adult residents of Rochester, Minnesota experienced 1235 Colles' fractures. Fracture incidence among women increased over sixfold between ages 35-39 and 60-64 and then leveled off. Male rates were lower in every age group and did not rise as dramatically. Fractures associated with moderate trauma were responsible for the increased incidence with age and the excess among women. Overall, Rochester rates were 30 per cent o…
