Introduction: The role of affect in STEM teacher learning
How does it feel to hear colleagues doubt mathematics students' ability to learn? What might move otherwise asset-oriented teachers to express such sentiments? What simmers beneath their responses, and how might professional development facilitators support their affective learning?Several recent reviews have identified a marked increase in the amount of research on teachers' affect and/or emotions over the past few decades. In response to longstand…
Teachers as agentic synthesizers: Recontextualizing personally meaningful practices from professional development
Background Teacher learning from professional development (PD) remains undertheorized. Most PD studies focus on its content or structure to gauge learning, leaving substantive gaps in our understanding of teacher learning processes and the role of contexts. Therefore, we investigate teachers’ learning as they take practices from PD and adapt them to their own settings. Methods Using ethnographic methods and taking a situative perspective, we offer…
Deficit narratives as teacher foils: How Vulnerability and Emotional Regimes Shape Teacher Discourse
Teachers’ collegial conversations can be important sites for teachers’ learning, but sometimes result in deficit narratives about students and families. Research seldom “gets inside” teachers’ collegial conversations to shed light on when and why deficit narratives arise. In this study, we investigate how deficit narratives are co-constructed, and what function they serve in teachers’ discourse. Specifically, we look at the relationship between t…
More than Multilingual: Investigating Teachers’ Learning to Support Multilingual Students through an Intersectional Lens
Traditional teacher andragogy models oversimplify teaching multilingual students, overlooking both the complexity of identity and the contexts in which this work occurs. In this paper, we describe our intersectional approach to research, highlighting its affordances for research on teachers’ learning to support multilingual students. This intersectional lens opens urgent new research questions, invites different types of data, and offers informat…
But What Does it Look Like in Maths: A Framework for Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy in Mathematics
In response to urgent calls for teaching that is culturally affirming, scholars have developed a myriad of images of culturally sustaining (and related) pedagogies (CSPs). However, for maths teachers, CSPs remain elusive, in part because these images are typically content-neutral and their applicability to practice opaque. In this paper, I synthesize research to help conceptualize and clarify what CSPs may look like specifically in mathematics cl…
Reframing translanguaging practices to shift mathematics teachers’ language ideologies
While dominant narratives about multilingual students position them as deficient, translanguaging theory has played a critical role in making space for the languaging practices of multilingual students in education. However, we know little about how to best support mathematics teachers' learning about translanguaging. Working with a group of accomplished mathematics teachers taking part in professional development on culturally sustaining pedagog…

Los entornos saludables y la calidad de vida. Estudio “Healthy Cities”
The characteristics and structural performance of different urban environments can be determining factors in the health status of people. Based on the Healthy Cities project (Sanitas), the aim of this study was to examine the physical activity, nutritional adherence to Mediterranean diet, happiness and sleepiness profiles of the workers of companies involved. An observational, descriptive and transversal study was designed, with a sample of 2491 …
What Makes Mathematics Teacher Coaching Effective? A Call for a Justice-Oriented Perspective
Mathematics teacher coaching is a promising but largely overlooked form of professional development (PD) for supporting mathematics teachers' learning of justice-oriented teaching. In this article, we critically review the literature to illuminate what we currently know about mathematics teacher coaching and to highlight studies' contributions and limitations to inform future work. Broadly, we find that four programs of research have developed, i…
A King's Ransom: The Life of Charles Theveneau de Morande, Blackmailer, Scandalmonger and Master-Spy
By any standards Charles-ClaudeThéveneau de Morande was a very unpleasant individual indeed—a bully, a libertine, a ne’er-do-well, a blackmailer, the journalist author of scandalous pamphlets, he was nothing but ‘a vile libeller’ and a ‘coward’ said some; nothing but a ‘monster’ said others. Yet this detailed biography by Simon Burrows of this ‘monster’ does a fine job of capturing this man’s particular life, however unseemly and unpleasant it of…
Estimating physical activity level: The role of domestic activities: Table 1
Appropriate measures of physical activity are essential for determining the population prevalence of physical activity, for tracking trends over time, and for guiding intervention efforts. Physical activity measurement is characterised by the synthesis of information on the type, frequency, intensity, and duration of activity over a specified period. To date, emphasis in physical activity assessment has been on the measurement of leisure time phy…
Magnetic prospection at high resolution: Survey of large silo-pits in Iron Age enclosures
Large, isolated, rock-cut pits located as regular features during a programme of detailed fluxgate gradiometry and excavation within ditched enclosures of mid to later Iron Age date from the northern Cotswolds (Gloucestershire, UK) are discussed as a case study in terms of their properties, problems of prospection and possible interpretation. General issues regarding detection of other anomalously large pits on such sites are also raised. Copyrig…
Palaeoclimatic interpretation of stable isotope data from Holocene speleothems of the Waitomo district, North Island, New Zealand
One straw stalactite and three stalagmites from the Waitomo district of North Island, New Zealand, were examined for stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon with a view to interpreting their palaeoclimate signal. Dating was by uranium series and AMS 14 C for the stalagmites and by gamma-ray spectrometry for the straw. Records were thus established for about 100 years for the straw and 3.9, 10.1 and 10.2 ka for the stalagmites. The range of variabili…
The Use of Forrester's Systems Dynamics Approach in Urban Modelling
In Urban Dynamics J. W. Forrester extended his system dynamics method to the problems of urban modelling. The article describes his concepts and model of the city and outlines some of their limitations. The results and implications of the model's use are also examined. The appendix describes and analyses some of the model's equations
