  • Malaria Prevalence, Indoor Residual Spraying, and Insecticide Treated Net Usage in Sub-Saharan Africa

Gabriel Picone, Robyn Kibler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Development•2017

This paper examines the extent to which bed net usage is responsive to changes in malaria prevalence and whether indoor residual spraying crowds out bed net usage. We show that malaria prevalence increases the probability of sleeping under an insecticide treated net but the implied elasticities are below one. For children under five, a one percentage point increase in malaria prevalence increases the probability of sleeping under a bed net by 0.4…

  • The impact of debt relief on under five mortality rate in Sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•John Bosco Oryema, Kwabena Gyimah‐Brempong et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2017

This paper examines the impact of the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative on under five mortality rate (U5MR) in Sub-Saharan Africa. The HIPC Initiative involves debt forgiveness and the redirection of funds that were meant to service external debt towards the provision of social services and poverty reduction in eligible countries. The Initiative is akin to a natural experiment since some countries benefited while some did not, and …

  • Causes of the Change in the Rates of Mortality and Severe Complications of Diabetes Mellitus

    Arseniy Yashkin, Arseniy P Yashkin et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2015•References: 32

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the causes of the changes in the rates of mortality and select severe complications of diabetes mellitus, type 2 (T2D) among the elderly between 1992 and 2012. RESEARCH DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study design based on Medicare 5% administrative claims data from 1992 to 2012 was used. Traditional fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries, age 65 and older, diagnosed with T2D and living in the United States between 1992 and …

  • Does Higher Hospital Cost Imply Higher Quality of Care

Gabriel Picone, Gabriel A Picone et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2003

This study investigates whether higher input use per stay in the hospital (treatment intensity) and longer length of stay improve outcomes of care. We allow for endogeneity of intensity and length of stay by estimating a quasi-maximum-likelihood discrete factor model, where the distribution of the unmeasured variable is modeled using a discrete distribution. Data on elderly persons come from several waves of the National Long-Term Care Survey mer…

  • Costs and outcomes of hip fracture and stroke, 1984 to 1994

Frank A Sloan, Diana Hopkins Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1999•References: 16

OBJECTIVES: This study quantified changes in Medicare payments and outcomes for hip fracture and stroke from 1984 to 1994. METHODS: We studied National Long Term Care Survey respondents who were hospitalized for hip fracture (n = 887) or stroke (n = 878) occurring between 1984 and 1994. Changes in Medicare payment and survival were primary outcomes. We also assessed changes in functional and cognitive status. RESULTS: Medicare payments within 6 m…
