Los tatuajes de la Santa Muerte
This multimedia piece explores tattooing as a religious practice among devotees of Santa Muerte in Mexico City and surrounding areas. The roots of the devotion to this saint are complex, with influences ranging from Indigenous traditions and colonial Catholicism to popular culture. After emerging in the public eye in 2001 in Tepito, this devotion has expanded beyond Mexico. Devotees, many of whom come from socially and economically marginalized b…
Introduction: Religion and Science in Sociological Perspective: Assessing Their Relationship
The introduction to this special section identifies the need for a renewed focus on the sociological study of the relationship between “religion” and “science,” however these terms might be operationalized. The necessity of better understanding this relationship, it is argued, requires exploration beyond the US and Europe as well as recognition of the potential benefits of new approaches in the contexts where analyses of the religion-science rela…
Religious tattooing has evolved from a ritual to a profession. By materializing beliefs, tattooists experience the tension between art and spirituality. This study examines how tattoo parlors have become a space where contemporary religious expression is configured, exploring the intersections between art, spirituality, and trade
The case for tattoos as religious practices. From footnote to survey indicator
Most studies in the sociology of religion in the West ignored religious tattoos or understood them as marginal practices. However, people have been getting religious tattoos since the beginning of the common era. I investigate the lack of sociological studies on religious tattoos and explain the marginal location of tattoos for the discipline. I propose a lived religion approach to understand tattoos as a legitimate religious practice and explore…
Tattoo Artists as Religious Figures
If tattoos have a religious function, tattooists play a role in crafting a spiritual object. Hence, we explore the religious function of the tattooist and how tattooists deal with religion in their work. We used a 'Lived Religion' approach that focuses on religious practices instead of religious organizations, because neither tattooists nor tattoo parlors are religiously legitimized figures or institutions. We collected data from tattooists from …
The construction of the sacred through photographs displayed in Latin American homes
From a sociological perspective, sacredness is a social construction. In this article, I stand at the intersection of the tradition of domestic shrines and the contemporary use of photography, from a perspective of lived religion. The aim is to clarify what are the sacred realities that structure daily life for Latin American participants. I argue that the practice of displaying pictures at home is a form of ‘sacralization practice’. The research…
Lived religion beyond words: A denotative analysis of participant-produced photos of meaningful objects
Can visual data provide insights that words do not reveal? Meanings of objects in visual studies are usually captured through elicitation meetings. In this article, we propose to explore them from a purely visual standpoint and assess the methodological and substantive benefits of such denotative approach. We used a database of 660 photographs produced by 225 participants in a study of everyday religious practices in three Latin American cities. …
Exploring the Nonaffiliated in South America
This work explores the phenomenon of the “nonaffiliated” in Latin America and presents partial results of a qualitative research project that included in-depth interviews with fifty-eight nonaffiliated in Cordoba (Argentina), Lima (Peru), and Montevideo (Uruguay). After analyzing the main differences between nonbelievers and believers who have no religious affiliation, we propose a typology for understanding these two groups, which display great …
Nobody Prays Alone: The Practice of Prayer Among Catholics in Three Latin American Cities
The Pope, the Poor, and the Role of Religion in Argentina's Public Sphere
Pope Francis's public statements about and criticisms of the global economic system and local politics present an opportunity to explore how ordinary people react to the presence of a religious voice in the public sphere. Data on people's perceptions of the pope's interventions collected from semistructured nonrandom interviews with 41 low-income Argentines of various religious orientations reveal that they identified and regulated the boundaries…
Women, Tattoos, and Religion an Exploration into Women's Inner Life
In this article, we study women's tattoos from a lived religion perspective. We describe how women's tattoos express their inner lives, the religious dynamics associated with tattooing, and how they negotiate them with others. The sample used came from surveys and interviews targeting tattooed women at a confessional college on the East Coast of the United States. Women appropriate a prevalent cultural practice like body art to express their reli…
I've got you under my skin: Tattoos and religion in three Latin American cities
In this article, the author argues that some contemporary tattoos might be considered 'sacralization practices', that is, processes whereby the subjects distinguish some reality they deem special from the rest. The author studied Latin Americans' tattoos in a context of mainstream life, while paying attention to designs, meanings, and the interaction of tattoos with religious membership. Based on a non-random sample of 21 subjects from three diff…
This article critically explores the explanations of religious dynamics in Argentina based on Secularization Theory (TdS). Most scholarship uses political-institutional relations as an independent variable; therefore, TdS focuses on what takes place within the leadership of the institution and intermediate organizations. This research collects data directly from a century of baptism records in the city of Córdoba (Argentina) and compares it with …
"Why Study Religion from a Latin American Sociological Perspective? An Introduction to Religions Issue, "Religion in Latin America, and among Latinos Abroad
This article introduces the Religions issue on Latin American religiosity exploring sociological perspectives on the Latin American religious situation, from a Latin American perspective. The Secularization Theory proposes "the more modernity, the less religion", but in Latin America we see both, modernity and religiosity. The Religious Economy model, on the other hand, affirms "the more pluralization, the more religion", but in Latin America the…
The Symbolic Efficacy of Pope Francis's Religious Capital and the Agency of the Poor
This article explores the paradox between Pope Francis's success as a critic of global markets and the limitations of his religious capital in his home country of Argentina. While for some observers it might be obvious that the pope can influence people's thinking about social and political matters, the findings of this article highlight the role of 'non-specialist', ordinary believers in setting limits to Francis's religious power. Using Bourdie…
Political pluralization and the declining scope of religious authority in Argentina’s 1960s: The case of Cristianismo y Revolución
The transformation of global Catholicism during the Second Vatican Council affected the Argentinean Church. Argentinean Catholics became involved in different sides of the political discussion. While some supported a dictatorial regime, others thought the end of the dictatorship and a fair society could only be achieved through a revolution. In that context, we explore Mark Chavez’s idea of secularization as the decline of religious authority. Th…
An enchanted modernity: Making sense of Latin America's religious landscape
This is an interpretative, critical, and selective review of scholarly contributions that explore Latin America's religious landscape. We present data, both qualitative and quantitative, from Latin America and analyze the explanations given to make sense of it. After assessing the literature that uses either secularization theory or the "religious economy" approach, we study explanations that highlight a Latin American style of "popular religiosi…

Catholicism(s), State Terrorism and Secularisation in Argentina
The aims of this article are to explore the diversity of Catholic reactions facing state terror in Córdoba, Argentina, during the 1970s and to analyse how different Catholic groups redefined their relations with the State in the public sphere. To do that, I will use case study methodology applied to the kidnapping of an American priest and five seminarians. I will show how religious beliefs shape to some extent how Catholic social actors respond …
El terrorismo de estado y el catolicismo en Argentina: El caso de los Misioneros de La Salette
The aim of this paper is, first, to explore the diversity of Catholic reactions\nfacing state terror in Córdoba, Argentina, during the 1970s. Second, I will analyze how\ndifferent Catholic groups, because of the state terror, redefined their relations with the\nchurch’s authority, the state’s power and the modernization process. This analysis will\nbe done by focussing on a case study, the so-called “La Salette case”, the kidnapping of\nan Americ…
Charles Taylor's `imaginary' and `best account' in Latin America
Imaginary is, in Taylor's thought, a category of understanding social praxis and the reasons people give to make sense of these practices. The ultimate reason is the hypergood, which influences the strong decisions. Those strong evaluations outline the moral framework from which people address their own lives and the lives of others. We only recognize our cultural framework as an `imaginary' — challenging the supposition it is something `objectiv…
