Cost-effectiveness of in-kind nutritional support for impoverished persons with tuberculosis to reduce mortality and disengagement from care in India
BACKGROUND: Undernutrition is a leading risk factor for tuberculosis (TB) mortality and poor treatment outcomes. We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of providing in-kind nutritional support to impoverished persons with TB (PWTB) in India. METHODS: We developed a Markov model comparing standard care with a household-level nutritional food-basket intervention. Model parameters were informed from systematic reviews and a recent cluster-randomised st…
Looking under the lamp-post
Contact tracing forms a crucial part of the public-health toolbox in mitigating and understanding emergent pathogens and nascent disease outbreaks. Contact tracing in the United States was conducted during the pre-Omicron phase of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This tracing relied on voluntary reporting and responses, often using rapid antigen tests due to lack of accessibility to PCR tests. These limitations, combined with SARS-CoV-2's propensit…
Reproducible Science Is Vital for a Stronger Evidence Base During the Covid‐19 Pandemic
Reproducible research becomes even more imperative as we build the evidence base on SARS‐CoV‐2 epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. In his study, Paez assessed the reproducibility of COVID‐19 research during the pandemic, using a case study of population density. He found that most articles that assess the relationship of population density and COVID‐19 outcomes do not publicly share data and code, except for a few, including our p…
No magic bullet
In the face of a long-running pandemic, understanding the drivers of ongoing SARS-CoV-2 transmission is crucial for the rational management of COVID-19 disease burden. Keeping schools open has emerged as a vital societal imperative during the pandemic, but in-school transmission of SARS-CoV-2 can contribute to further prolonging the pandemic. In this context, the role of schools in driving SARS-CoV-2 transmission acquires critical importance. Her…

Projecting Quarantine Utilization During a Pandemic
Objectives. To develop an approach to project quarantine needs during an outbreak, particularly for communally housed individuals who interact with outside individuals. Methods. We developed a method that uses basic surveillance data to do short-term projections of future quarantine needs. The development of this method was rigorous, but it is conceptually simple and easy to implement and allows one to anticipate potential superspreading events. …
Variation in Initiation, Engagement, and Retention on Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Based on Health Insurance Plan Design
BACKGROUND: The association between cost-sharing and receipt of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) is unknown. METHODS: We constructed a cohort of 10,513 commercially insured individuals with a new diagnosis of opioid use disorder and information on insurance cost-sharing in a large national deidentified claims database. We examined 4 cost-sharing measures: (1) pharmacy deductible; (2) medical service deductible; (3) pharmacy medication co…
Alcohol and Tobacco Use in a Tuberculosis Treatment Cohort during South Africa’s Covid-19 Sales Bans
From these observations, we hypothesize that policies restricting alcohol and tobacco availability seem to enable some individuals to reduce their consumption. However, these appear to have little effect on the volume of AA consumed among individuals with more harmful patterns of drinking in the absence of additional behavior change interventions
HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis and Buprenorphine at a Drug Detoxification Center During the Opioid Epidemic
Estimated Prevalence of Opioid Use Disorder in Massachusetts, 2011–2015
Objectives. To estimate the annual prevalence of opioid use disorder (OUD) in Massachusetts from 2011 to 2015. Methods. We performed a multisample stratified capture–recapture analysis to estimate OUD prevalence in Massachusetts. Individuals identified from 6 administrative databases for 2011 to 2012 and 7 databases for 2013 to 2015 were linked at the individual level and included in the analysis. Individuals were stratified by age group, sex, an…
The Relationship Between Rural Status, Individual Characteristics, and Self‐Rated Health in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
Purpose: To examine rural status and social factors as predictors of self‐rated health in community‐dwelling adults in the United States. Methods: This study uses multinomial logistic and cumulative logistic models to evaluate the associations of interest in the 2006 US Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a cross‐sectional survey of 347,709 noninstitutionalized adults. Findings: Self‐rated health was poorer among rural residents, compared…
