  • What remains

Open Access•Nigel Wight, Jill Harris et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2025

On 28 March 1965, an earthquake triggered the collapse of a mine waste facility at the El Soldado copper mine in central Chile. The failure released a massive volume of tailings that destroyed the adjacent El Cobre settlement and caused significant loss of life. Most of the victims remain buried beneath the tailings. Despite the scale of the disaster, the mine resumed operations and continues to operate today. Survivors and their families, who ca…

  • The catastrophic failure of the Jagersfontein tailings dam

Open Access•Lochner Marais, Deanna Kemp et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2024

This study provides a sociohistorical account of decisions made over a 150-year period about the Jagersfontein mine in South Africa’s Free State and the catastrophic failure of its tailings dam that occurred in the early morning of 11 September 2022. The failure resulted in the sudden and uncontrolled release of more than 6 million m3 of liquid sludge, smothering nearly 200 nearby houses and approximately 1,600 ha of agricultural and grazing land…

  • Disaster scenes as a foundation for emergency response planning

Open Access•John R Owen, Deanna Kemp et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2024

This article introduces the notion of ‘disaster scenes’. In this work, we draw on interview data collected from residents impacted by the Jagersfontein tailings disaster in South Africa in September 2022. Our methodological aim is to reconstruct the experiences of impacted people in the format of empirically derived disaster scenes. These scenes provide a credible source for modelling scenarios because they showcase the prior, immediate, response…

  • Comparing 12-Month Outcomes for Group CBT Versus Group CBT Plus Yoga for Depression and Anxiety

    Open Access•Melissa O’Shea, Emma E Houston et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Mental…•2023

Emerging research shows yoga, a body-based mindfulness practice, appears to augment the benefits of transdiagnostic group CBT up to 3-month post-treatment, but less is known about longer-term outcomes. This mixed-methods study reports on 12-month findings of a pragmatic preference trial with adults ( N = 59) diagnosed with depression or anxiety. It compares longer-term outcomes between adults who completed either a group CBT program or group CBT …

  • Commentary

    Open Access•John S Palatucci, Sujoy Chakravarty et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2023•References: 12

BACKGROUND: The 2020-2029 strategic plan for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Trust Fund calls for addressing data infrastructure gaps that are critical for studying issues around intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Specifically, the plan calls for data collection on economic factors that affect person-centered approaches to health care decision-making. Among people with I/DD and their caregivers, such economic factors may i…

  • Energy transition minerals and their intersection with land-connected peoples

    Open Access•John R Owen, Deanna Kemp et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2022•Cited by: 17•References: 10

Rapidly transitioning the global energy system to renewables is considered necessary to combat climate change. Current estimates suggest that at least 30 energy transition minerals and metals (ETMs) form the material base for the energy transition. The inventory of ETMs indicates a high level of intersectionality with territories less impacted by the historic forces of industrialization. To identify the current global footprint, 5,097 ETM project…

  • Fast track to failure? Energy transition minerals and the future of consultation and consent

    Open Access•John R Owen, Deanna Kemp et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2022•Cited by: 30•References: 20

Energy transition mineral and metals (ETM) are being widely discussed for their utility in combating climate change. However, their contribution with respect to social and environmental impact does not feature prominently in contemporary debates. In this paper we present findings showing the extent to which the world's ETM projects will intersect with Indigenous Peoples' and Peasant lands – the lands of people who under existing United Nations-le…

  • Effects of Military Training on Minor Workplace Deviance

Myra Ford, Jeremy J Foreman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political & Military…•2021

Deviant behavior associated with a firm’s brand comes at a substantial cost to the organization. Corporations are becoming increasingly interested in the personal conduct of employees on and off duty. For this reason, firms may seek out employees with military backgrounds because they believe military training helps to shape ethical and disciplined habits. Several studies indicate military veterans may be less likely to engage in deviant behavior…
