  • Roots of resilience

Open Access•Juan Antonio Ortega García, Juan Antonio Ortega‐García et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2026

Children today spend less time outdoors than previous generations, with potential consequences for health, learning and pro‐environmental attitudes. We assessed children's connection with and exposure to nature in a Mediterranean setting using the Nature Connection and Experience Index (NCEI), a composite measure that integrates an affective–cognitive connection‐to‐nature module with indicators of everyday nature experiences. A school‐based cross…

  • Nature-based interventions reduce physiological stress in children with chronic illnesses

Open Access•Francisco Díaz-Martínez, Miguel Felipe Sánchez Sauco et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction: Contact with nature is increasingly recognized as an important determinant of public health, yet limited objective evidence exists regarding its benefits for children with chronic illnesses. This study aimed to evaluate the short-term effects of a forest-based intervention on stress-related salivary biomarkers in vulnerable pediatric populations, including cancer survivors and children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Methods: A q…

  • Sociodemographic and health risk factors associated with health-related quality of life among adults living in Puerto Rico in 2019

    Open Access•Irene Frontera-Escudero, José A Bartolomei et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

This paper shows that the prevalence of poor HRQoL has not improved compared to the only previous study of HRQoL of Puerto Rico in the last decade. We also found that poor HRQoL is associated with having multiple chronic conditions in adults living in Puerto Rico. This may be a consequence of a decline in health services after natural disasters and socioeconomic downturns on the island. The study emphasizes the need for targeted interventions and…

  • Inequalities in Exposure to Ambient Air Neurotoxicants and Disparities in Markers of Neurodevelopment in Children by Maternal Nativity Status

Open Access•Faven Araya, Jeanette A Stingone et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Exposure levels to environmental pollutants vary significantly among different populations. These inequities in exposure to hazardous air pollutants (HAP) among different populations can contribute to disparities in neurodevelopmental outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine if exposure to HAP varies by maternal nativity status, a demographic marker often overlooked in the study of health disparities. We also assessed if those inequalitie…

  • Metabolic Outcomes in Southern Italian Preadolescents Residing Near an Industrial Complex

Open Access•Esha Bansal, Donatella Placidi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Evidence suggests that environmental exposures and socioeconomic factors may interact to produce metabolic changes in children. We assessed the influence of residential location and socioeconomic status (SES) on pediatric body mass index (BMI) Z-score and fasting blood glucose (FBG) concentration. Participants included 214 children aged 6-11 years who live near a large industrial complex in Taranto, Italy. Participants were grouped into residenti…

  • Communicating environmental exposure results and health information in a community-based participatory research study

Open Access•Luz Claudio, Jalisa Gilmore et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

We conclude that effective communication of exposure results of unknown clinical significance to participants in environmental health studies can be achieved by providing group summary results and actionable health information. Results suggest that there was an improvement in knowledge of environmental health and in risk reduction behaviors in our study population

  • The Combined Influence of Air Pollution and Home Learning Environment on Early Cognitive Skills in Children

Open Access•Elle Lett, Jeanette A Stingone et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Cognitive skills are one component of school readiness that reflect a child's neurodevelopment and are influenced by environmental and social factors. Most studies assess the impact of these factors individually, without taking into consideration the complex interactions of multiple factors. The objective of this study was to examine the joint association of markers of environmental pollution and of social factors on early cognitive skills in an …

  • Components of Recommended Asthma Care and the Use of Long-Term Control Medication Among Urban Children With Asthma

    Jeanette A Stingone, Luz Claudio•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2009•References: 30

BACKGROUND: Previous research has documented an underuse of long-term control medications among children with asthma, in nonadherence with national guidelines on asthma care. OBJECTIVES: To determine if factors related to access and quality of asthma care are associated with underuse of long-term control medication among children with asthma. RESEARCH DESIGN: A parent-report cross-sectional survey conducted in 26 randomly selected New York City p…

  • Housing and Health

Open Access•Virginia Rauh, Virginia A Rauh et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the New York Academy of…•2008

The importance of adequate housing for the maintenance of health and well‐being has long been a topic of scientific and public health policy discussion, but the links remain elusive. Here we explore the role of the residential environment in the etiology of illness (specifically asthma) and the persistence of socioeconomic health disparities. Housing conditions, shaped by social forces, affect exposure to physical and chemical “toxicants,” thereb…

  • Asthma and Enrollment in Special Education Among Urban Schoolchildren

Jeanette A Stingone, Luz Claudio•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•References: 30

Objectives. We assessed whether asthma is associated with urban children’s use of special education services. Methods. We conducted a cross-sectional study in 24 randomly selected New York City public elementary schools using a parent-report questionnaire focusing on sociodemographic characteristics, special education enrollment, asthma diagnosis and symptoms, school absences, and use of health care services. Results. Thirty-four percent of child…

  • The Health of Latino Children

Glenn Flores, Elena Fuentes-Afflick et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA•2002

Latinos recently became the largest racial/ethnic minority group of US children. The Latino Consortium of the American Academy of Pediatrics Center for Child Health Research, consisting of 13 expert panelists, identified the most important urgent priorities and unanswered questions in Latino child health. Conclusions were drawn when consensus was reached among members, with refinement through multiple iterations. A consensus statement with suppor…
