Development and Validation of a Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire
PURPOSE: The effect of physical activity during pregnancy on maternal and fetal health remains controversial and studies have yet to identify the optimal dose of physical activity associated with favorable pregnancy outcomes. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a pregnancy physical activity questionnaire (PPAQ). METHODS: To ascertain the type, duration, and frequency of physical activities performed by pregnant women, three 24-h phy…
Risk and Protective Factors for Adult and Child Hunger Among Low-Income Housed and Homeless Female-Headed Families
Objectives. We sought to identify factors associated with adult or child hunger. Methods. Low-income housed and homeless mothers were interviewed about socioeconomic, psychosocial, health, and food sufficiency information. Multinomial logistic regression produced models predicting adult or child hunger. Results. Predictors of adult hunger included mothers’ childhood sexual molestation and current parenting difficulties, or “hassles.” Risk factors…
Hunger

Previous studies that document the deleterious effects of hunger among children cannot distinguish child from family hunger and do not take into account some critical environmental, maternal, and child variables that may influence child outcomes. This study examines the independent contribution of child hunger on children’s physical and m…
Influence of a Mindfulness Meditation-Based Stress Reduction Intervention on Rates of Skin Clearing in Patients With Moderate to Severe Psoriasis Undergoing Photo Therapy (UVB) and Photochemotherapy (…
OBJECTIVE: This study tests the hypothesis that stress reduction methods based on mindfulness meditation can positively influence the rate at which psoriasis clears in patients undergoing phototherapy or photochemotherapy treatment. METHODS: Thirty-seven patients with psoriasis about to undergo ultraviolet phototherapy (UVB) or photochemotherapy (PUVA) were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: a mindfulness meditation-based stress reductio…
Medicare Treatment Differences for Blacks and Whites
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated racial differences in procedure use among elderly Medicare beneficiaries. It is hypothesized that providers do not discriminate inappropriately in treating black and white patients and that the apparent differences in black-white treatment could be attributed to other differences between the two populations. METHODS: Rates of use for selected procedures were examined among two patient groups: (1) the universe o…
