Integrating a Sport-Based Trauma-Sensitive Program in a National Youth-Serving Organization
There is a pressing need to equip youth-serving community organizations to respond to the unique needs of trauma-exposed children. Early prevention measures can be an effective means of redirecting children to self-regulatory healing, while facilitating their transition toward strength-based thriving. Sport can offer a powerful opportunity to reach these children; however there remains little information on how to effectively develop, deliver, ev…
An Experimental Study of Implicit Racial Bias in Recognition of Child Abuse
We demonstrated an experimental approach to study the influence of implicit racial bias on recognition of child abuse. Though we failed to find an effect, it is too early to conclude that none exists. The relationship among human cognition, behavior, and healthcare disparities is complex. Studies are needed that incorporate diverse approaches, clinical contexts and scenarios, patient and physician characteristics, and validated measures if we are…
Burden of Cervical, Anal, and Oral HPV in an Inner-City Pre-vaccine Adolescent Population
Exposure to Sexually Explicit Web Sites and Adolescent Sexual Attitudes and Behaviors
What Affects Time to Care in Emergency Room Appendicitis Patients
BACKGROUND: Emergency departments (EDs) provide a safety net for seriously ill individuals. Little is known about factors that affect time to diagnosis and treatment of patients with time-sensitive conditions within the ED. METHODS: Retrospective observational study of 236 appendicitis patients examining patient factors and ED characteristics with time to a surgeon's diagnosis of appendicitis and ED length of stay (LOS). RESULTS: Time to surgeon'…
Alcohol and Drug Use, and Depression Among Hispanic Men in Early Adulthood
Community research and clinical practice have shown that alcohol and drug use and depression are interrelated. Among Hispanics, acculturation may play a role in these relationships. To investigate these relationships as well as alcohol‐related problems, we interviewed 288 Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Colombian men in early adulthood. No significant differences emerged in the proportions of abstainers across the three groups. Colombians drank sign…
An Epidemiological Study of Disorders in Late Childhood and Adolescence—I. Age‐ and Gender‐Specific Prevalence
Developmental aspects of psychiatric disorders may be inferred from patterns of age differences in prevalence. Age‐specific prevalences are provided for nine disorders in a general population sample of ages 10–20. Age and gender patterns for several disorders suggest developmental stage‐associated risks. These include oppositional disorder in both genders and conduct disorder and major depression in girls. Major depression shows a pattern suggest…
