The Southern Center for Maternal Health Equity (SCMHE)
Introduction: The maternal mortality crisis in the United States disproportionately affects women who are Black, especially those living in the Gulf South. These disparities result from a confluence of healthcare, policy, and social factors that systematically place Black women at greater risk of maternal morbidities and mortality. This study protocol describes the Southern Center for Maternal Health Equity (SCMHE), a research center funded by th…
Development and Unfolding of the Life Course Movement in the Field of Maternal and Child Health
The integration of life course theory into the MCH field signified a major shift towards addressing protective and social factors, which aligns with the field's historical emphasis on social justice and rights-based approaches, and parallels the broader public health movement towards social determinants of health and the need to address structural racism. The ongoing relevance of the life course approach in promoting reproductive justice and addr…
Barriers and Facilitators to Improving Cardiovascular Health in Churches with Predominantly Black Congregations
These findings can inform the implementation of interventions for improving cardiovascular health and reducing disparities in black church communities
The Impact of Reimbursement for Non–Face-to-Face Chronic Care Management on Comprehensive Metabolic Biomarkers Among Multimorbid Patients With Type 2 Diabetes
AIMS: We evaluated the impact of reimbursement for non-face-to-face chronic care management (NFFCCM) on comprehensive metabolic risk factors among multimorbid Medicare beneficiaries with type 2 diabetes in Louisiana. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We implemented a propensity score method to obtain comparable treatment (n=1501 with NFFCCM) and control (n=17,524 without NFFCCM) groups. Patients with type 2 diabetes were extracted from the electronic health…
Effect of Yoga and Mindfulness Intervention on Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression in Young Adolescents Attending Middle School
Mental health conditions in childhood and adolescence are increasing in the U.S. population and require early intervention, as highlighted by a recent Surgeon General's Advisory on Protecting Youth Mental Health. These health issues, which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, impair functioning, and may lead to longer term reductions in quality of life. Young adolescents are likely to experience stressors including academic pressure, f…
Health, Neighborhoods, and School Readiness from the Parent Perspective
The objective of this qualitative study was to address existing gaps in the literature by gathering parent perspectives on both health and school readiness in regard to neighborhood context, specifically parents' perceived level of neighborhood safety and support, on physical health and the behavioral and cognitive domains of school readiness. Focus groups were conducted with a total of 28 parents or caregivers whose children attended Early Head …
Improving the reporting of health research involving design
Design is being used more frequently in global health practice but is not reported on sufficiently for transparency, evaluability and wider dissemination. Reporting guidelines are useful in improving the quality and quantity of dissemination of work in peer-reviewed literature for global health. Building on available literature and current practice in design for global health, we present a reporting guideline that can be used by scholars and prac…
A Linked Community and Health Facility Intervention to Improve Newborn Health in Cambodia
The intervention improved factors understood to be associated with newborn survival and health. Well-designed training, followed by regular supervision, enhanced the knowledge and self-reported behavior of health staff and health volunteers, as well as mothers' own knowledge of newborn danger signs. However, further improvement in newborn care, including care-seeking for illness and handwashing among mothers and families, will require additional …
Pregnant Women’s Intentions to Deliver at a Health Facility in the Pastoralist Communities of Afar, Ethiopia
Despite the significant benefits of giving birth at a health facility to improve maternal and child health, the practice remains lower than expected in pastoralist communities of Ethiopia. Understanding the intentions of pregnant women to use health facilities for delivery predicts the adoption of the behavior, yet documented evidence of intention in the context of pastoralist populations remains scarce. The current study aimed to assess pregnant…
Human-centred design in global health
Health and wellbeing are determined by a number of complex, interrelated factors. The application of design thinking to questions around health may prove valuable and complement existing approaches. A number of public health projects utilizing human centered design (HCD), or design thinking, have recently emerged, but no synthesis of the literature around these exists. The results of a scoping review of current research on human centered design f…
The Life Course Implications of Ready to Use Therapeutic Food for Children in Low-Income Countries
The development of ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) for the treatment of uncomplicated cases of severe acute malnutrition in young children from 6 months to 5 years old has greatly improved survival through the ability to treat large numbers of malnourished children in the community setting rather than at health facilities during emergencies. This success has led to a surge in demand for RUTF in low income countries that are frequently food i…
Environmental Factors and Wash Practices in the Perinatal Period in Cambodia
Infection contributes to a significant proportion of neonatal death and disability worldwide, with the major burden occurring in the first week of life. Environmental conditions and gaps in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices may contribute to the risk of infection, particularly in settings where health centers are expanding to meet the growing demand for skilled care at birth and homes do not have adequate access to water and sanitati…
