Utilization of hospital services by cardiovascular patients, Alberta, Canada
Using hospital discharge records, and United States DRG (diagnosis related groups) data, we studied hospital utilization by cardiovascular patients, associated hospital expenditures, and the per capita cost of treating cardiovascular diseases in Alberta, Canada between 1971 and 1986. Expressed in constant 1984 Canadian dollars, the estimated total hospital cost increased from $84 million in 1971 to $131 million in 1986; during this period the Pro…
Cross-Validation of a Patient Classification Procedure
The objective of this article is to present the methods used for the validation of a patient classification system that was based on the concept of types of care (PCTC system). The PCTC system was developed to improve placement decisions for long-term care patients and also to provide information required for planning in the field of long-term care. A sample of long-term care patients was selected from various institutions/programs and the patien…
A Patient-Classification System for Long-Term Care
A system for patient classification by types of care (referred to in this article as the PCTC system) was developed. The objectives of the system are to improve placement decisions for long-term care patients and to provide information that would be useful for planning and resource allocation in the long-term care field. The PCTC system attempts to resolve placement problems of long-term care patients based on patient care need and a system persp…
The worth of a screening program
A statistical decision model is applied to the benefit evaluation of screening projects to derive an expression which provides upper and lower limits for average benefits in terms of prevalance rates of screen positives and negatives, and the average cost of screening and referral. Possible applications of such a technique are discussed and a numerical example is given
Note on the Equivalence of the Significance Test of the Partial Point-Biserial Correlation and the One-Factor Analysis of Covariance for Two Treatment Groups
An identity is demonstrated between (1) the squared Student's t-statistic obtained as a transformation of the sample point-biserial correlation coefficient relating dichotomous variable, 21, to continuous variable x, with the effects of a third variable, x, partialed out; and (2) the F-statistic resulting from a one-factor, two-group (the y dichotomy) analysis of covariance on the x variable Mth the third variable, x, covaried
Applications of Multivariate Analysis of Variance to Educational and Psychological Research
The usual Gauss-Markoff linear model for least squares analysis has been developed by Rao for the theory of multivariate linear models. This paper develops a series of computational concepts and formulae which enable flexible work with the general multivariate linear model
