  • Getting the ROC into Sync

Liu Yang, Kajal Lahiri et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2024

Judging the conformity of binary events in macroeconomics and finance has often been done with indices that measure synchronization. In recent years, the use of Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve has become popular for this task. This article shows that the ROC and synchronization approaches are closely related, and each can be derived from a decision-making framework. Furthermore, the resulting global measures of the degree of conform…

  • Predicting binary outcomes based on the pair-copula construction

  • Confidence Bands for ROC Curves With Serially Dependent Data

Kajal Lahiri, Liu Yang•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2018

We propose serial correlation-robust asymptotic confidence bands for the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and its functional, viz., the area under ROC curve (AUC), estimated by quasi-maximum likelihood in the binormal model. Our simulation experiments confirm that this new method performs fairly well in finite samples, and confers an additional measure of robustness to nonnormality. The conventional procedure is found to be markedly …

  • Identifying the Mechanisms for Workplace Burden of Psychiatric Illness

Souvik Banerjee, Pinka Chatterji et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2014•References: 12

BACKGROUND: Although previous research indicates that mental disorders detract from labor market outcomes, little is known about which psychiatric symptoms are most important. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to identify the mechanisms, or most important symptoms, through which psychiatric disorders affect labor market outcomes. We focus on major depressive episode, panic attack, social phobia, and generalized anxiety disorder. Our appr…

  • A Structural Model of Social Security's Disability Determination Process

Jianting Hu, Kajal Lahiri et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2001

We estimate a multistage sequential logit model reflecting the structure of the disability determination process of the Social Security Administration (SSA). The model is estimated using household survey information exact-matched to SSA records on disability adjudications from 1989 to 1993. Under program provisions, different criteria dictate outcomes at different steps of the determination process. We find that, without the multistaged structura…

  • Estimation of a macroeconomic model with rational expectations and capital controls for developing countries

Open Access•Nadeem Ul Haque, Kajal Lahiri et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•1993•References: 1

  • A Comparative Study of Alternative Methods of Quantifying Qualitative Survey Responses Using Napm Data

Dasgupta, Susmita Dasgupta et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•1992

This article examines the effectiveness of a subjective probability approach to quantify three- category qualitative responses from expectations surveys. Since one cannot make a judgment on the validity of estimated expectations by comparing them with ex post outcomes, we use the National Association of Purchasing Managers survey data on materials buying prices and compare them with the Producer Price Index for intermediate materials and componen…

  • The Estimation and Interpretation of Urban Density Gradients

Kajal Lahiri, R Hamilton Lankford et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•1989

The negative-exponential varying-parameter, density-gradient model is generalized by introducing the Box–Cox transformation in conjunction with truncated and heteroscedastic errors. An interpretation of this density-gradient model is presented, based directly on the magnitude and response of the expected value of population density to changes in the model's conditioning variables. Previous studies interpreted the gradient parameters purely as des…

  • More Flexible Use of Survey Data on Expectations in Macroeconomic Models

Kajal Lahiri, Mark Zaporowski•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•1987

A flexible procedure is proposed whereby both the random and systematic errors in measurement of survey data on inflation expectations can be appropriately handled when these surveys are used in the estimation of macroeconomic models. During the period 1952–1980, Livingston's two expectations series and the SRC series systematically underestimated inflation expectations by nearly 25%. The ASA–NBER survey, however, does not exhibit such underestim…
