Care Continuity, Nephrologists’ Dialysis Facility Preferences, and Outcomes
Primary facility starts were common even when they were low quality, and outcomes were worse when nephrologists had low-quality primary facilities. Black patients disproportionately start dialysis at low-quality facilities and are less likely to have nephrologists with high-quality primary facilities. Policies that promote improved access to high-quality dialysis facilities may be necessary to alleviate these disparities
Calcimimetic Prescriptions in Fee-for-Service Medicare Beneficiaries Undergoing Dialysis
The results of this longitudinal cohort study showed that after transitioning calcimimetic coverage from Part D to Part B via TDAPA, calcimimetic prescriptions increased in a graded manner, with the largest increases experienced by patients previously subject to the highest out-of-pocket prescription drug costs. Medicare's TDAPA policy has the potential to expand access to medications for patients
Early Delays in Insurance Coverage and Long-term Use of Home-based Peritoneal Dialysis
BACKGROUND: Uninsured patients with end-stage renal disease face barriers to peritoneal dialysis (PD), a type of home dialysis that is associated with improved quality of life and reduced Medicare costs. Although uninsured patients using PD at dialysis start receive retroactive Medicare coverage for required predialysis services, coverage only applies for the calendar month of dialysis start. Thus, initiating dialysis later in the month yields lo…
A Deep Learning Approach for Predicting Antidepressant Response in Major Depression Using Clinical and Genetic Biomarkers
In the wake of recent advances in scientific research, personalized medicine using deep learning techniques represents a new paradigm. In this work, our goal was to establish deep learning models which distinguish responders from non-responders, and also to predict possible antidepressant treatment outcomes in major depressive disorder (MDD). To uncover relationships between the responsiveness of antidepressant treatment and biomarkers, we develo…
Combination of G72 Genetic Variation and G72 Protein Level to Detect Schizophrenia
The D-amino acid oxidase activator ( DAOA , also known as G72 ) gene is a strong schizophrenia susceptibility gene. Higher G72 protein levels have been implicated in patients with schizophrenia. The current study aimed to differentiate patients with schizophrenia from healthy individuals using G72 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and G72 protein levels by leveraging computational artificial intelligence and machine learning tools. A total o…
