Graphic-Output Temperature Data Loggers for Monitoring Vaccine Refrigeration
We conducted the first US study using graphic-output temperature data loggers in quantifying cold chain failure. Fifty-four vaccine refrigerators of a county outpatient health system were studied. Forty-eight percent maintained temperatures of 2°C to 8°C and 24% had protracted periods of temperatures less than 0°C. The correlation between the percentage of refrigerators with freezing temperatures and the pertussis rate for each health region was …
Self-Esteem and Caregivers' Attitudes toward Elderly Persons
A scale identifying 141 medical students who responded positively to geriatric patients was based on Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale modified by adding a phrase about geriatric care. Personal and professional role traits that predicted a positive therapeutic attitude were high scores on social desirability or self-monitoring and low scores on thanatophobia and depression. Senior medical students who expressed the highest self-esteem toward caring f…
Measuring Social Desirability among Senior Medical Students
The purpose of the study was to assess the role of medical students' social desirability scores on influencing their attitudes toward either a geriatric or hypochondriac patient. To carry out this investigation, we developed a social desirability scale that was domain-specific for medicine. Students' medical social desirability scores predicted negative attitudes and beliefs toward the geriatric but not the hypochondriac patient. This difference …
Role Behaviors in Routine Medical Interviews with Hypertensive Patients
The present study of routine follow-up interviews of 217 hypertensive patients by 11 health service providers (physicians or physician assistants) identified six types of verbal exchanges, exposition, closed question, direction, inquiry, explanation, and instruction/contracts. In conjunction with previous research, these results suggest that the verbal exchange structure of encounters between these roles is consistent across individuals, settings…
Procedures and Discrepancies of Blood Pressure Measurements in Two Community Health Centers
Three studies of blood pressure measurement were conducted in two primary care clinics. In study I, procedures for taking blood pressure were observed for seven nurses, and their readings were compared with readings taken in a standard manner. The results show that the nurses' procedure needed improvement; the systolic/diastolic discrepancies with the standard averaged 10.2/7.5 mmHg. In study II, the nurses were trained to improve their procedure…
