Nicotine Vaping and Co-occurring Substance Use Among Adolescents in the United States from 2017–2019
Background: The use of electronic cigarettes (or “vaping”) among adolescents remains a public health concern given exposure to harmful substances, plus potential association with cannabis and alcohol. Understanding vaping as it intersects with combustible cigarette use and other substance use can inform nicotine prevention efforts. Methods: Data were drawn from 51,872 US adolescents (grades 8, 10, 12, years: 2017–2019) from Monitoring the Future.…
Adolescents’ Use of Free Time and Associations with Substance Use from 1991 to 2019
Background: Understanding time trends in risk factors for substance use may contextualize and explain differing time trends in substance use. Methods: We examined data (N = 536,291; grades 8/10/12) from Monitoring the Future, years 1991-2019. Using Latent Profile Analyses, we identified six time use patterns: one for those working at a paid job and the other five defined by levels of socialization (low/high) and engagement in structured activitie…
Experiences of Online Bullying and Offline Violence‐Related Behaviors Among a Nationally Representative Sample of US Adolescents, 2011 to 2019
BACKGROUND: Being bullied online is associated with being bullied in school. However, links between online bullying and violence-related experiences are minimally understood. We evaluated potential disparities in these associations to illuminate opportunities to reduce school-based violence. METHODS: = 73 074). We used survey-weighted logistic and multinomial models to examine links between online bullying and five school-based violence-related e…
Explaining US Adolescent Depressive Symptom Trends Through Declines in Religious Beliefs and Service Attendance
Time use and associations with internalizing symptoms from 1991 to 2019 among US adolescents
Shifts in adolescent time use do not explain increases in depressive and other internalizing symptoms, which increased across different patterns of time use. Levels of internalizing symptoms were highest among those with low socialization, low recreational engagement, and those working substantial hours. Encouraging socialization, engagement in recreational activities, and providing mental health resources for isolated adolescents may reduce inte…
Linkages Between Patient-centered Medical Homes and Addiction Treatment Organizations
BACKGROUND: To meet their aims of providing comprehensive and coordinated care, patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs) need to coordinate services for individuals with substance use disorders. Yet, the 14,000 addiction treatment (AT) organizations across the United States that provide services for more than 1 million individuals daily are generally ill-prepared to work with PCMHs (eg, AT organizations often lack electronic health records). OBJECT…
Effects of Disease Misclassification on Exposure–Disease Association
Objectives. We explore how misclassification in disease status can distort the exposure–disease association in a study with dichotomous disease and exposure status. Methods. We define the difference in population odds ratios between populations with and without disease misclassification as population-level bias and derive the bias as a function of sensitivity and specificity for observed disease status. The magnitude and direction of bias can be …
