  • Organic Mercury Levels among the Yanomama of the Brazilian Amazon Basin

Kimberly Anne Sing, Daniel Hryhorczuk et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2003•Cited by: 5

The Catrimani River basin in northern Brazil is the home of the Yanomama and has been the site of renegade gold mining since 1980. Gold-mining operations release inorganic mercury (Hg) into the environment where it is organified and biomagnified in aquatic ecosystems. Ingestion of mercury-contaminated fish poses a potential hazard to fish-eating populations such as the Yanomama. We surveyed Hg levels in Yanomama villagers living near mined and un…

Results showed that (a) support persons in the family system were mentioned more frequently than those in the community system in all support functions and by all p…

  • Patterns of breast and cervical cancer screening at three public health centers in an inner-city urban area

S WHITMAN, David Ansell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1991•Cited by: 2•References: 6

In an effort to examine breast and cervical cancer screening patterns among poor African-American urban women, medical records were abstracted at three public health centers located in the inner city of Chicago. The proportions of eligible women at these three centers who received Pap smears, breast examinations, and mammograms were computed. These proportions were notably low and differed significantly among the three centers. Because the litera…

    Shu-Pi C Chen, Shu‐Pi C Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1983

This study documents the health problems managed by pediatric nurse practitioners (PNPs) and pediatricians and examines the effects of setting and provider group on the distribution of health problems. Proportional samples by clinic were selected from a total of 11,968 patient visits to five ambulatory care clinics during an 18-week period in 1978. A patient encounter form was devised and the ICD-9-CM was used as the coding system. Results indica…
