Identifying delays impacting maternal and perinatal deaths using a facility-based death audit review system integrated with community engagement
Background: Pakistan's persistently high maternal (178 per 100 000 livebirths) and neonatal (41 per 1000 livebirths) mortality ratios are compounded by lack of reliable data on the root causes and preventable risk factors, which hinders their effective use in improving care and progress toward safe, high-quality services. We sought to identify system delays impacting maternal and perinatal deaths using a facility-based death audit review system i…
Mapping respiratory health digital interventions in South and Southeast Asia
Background: The growing burden of respiratory disease, particularly in Asia, where mortality is higher and awareness and policy engagement lag, could be mitigated through rapidly advancing digital health tools that offer opportunities for improved management, prevention, and personal health empowerment. We aimed to map the existing evidence, technologies, opportunities, and gaps related to respiratory digital health interventions in South and Sou…

Recommendations for developing effective and safe paediatric and congenital heart disease services in low-income and middle-income countries
The global burden of paediatric and congenital heart disease (PCHD) is substantial. We propose a novel public health framework with recommendations for developing effective and safe PCHD services in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). This framework was created by the Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery Cardiac Surgery working group in collaboration with a group of international rexperts in providing paediatric and congenital car…

A Dynamic Risk Management Approach for Reducing Harm From Invasive Bedside Procedures Performed During Residency
Internal medicine (IM) residents frequently perform invasive bedside procedures during residency training. Bedside procedure training in IM programs may compromise patient safety. Current evidence suggests that IM training programs rely heavily on the number of procedures completed during training as a proxy for resident competence instead of using objective postprocedure patient outcomes. The authors posit that the results of procedural training…
Facing Death
The demand for medical assistance in dying remains high and controversial with a large knowledge gap to support optimal patient care. The study aimed to explore physicians' attitudes regarding euthanasia and examine the factors that related to these attitudes. We surveyed 135 physicians working at a tertiary-care hospital in Israel. The questionnaire was comprised of demographic and background information, DNR procedure information, encounters wi…

Raised Speed Limits, Speed Spillover, Case-Fatality Rates, and Road Deaths in Israel
Objectives. We assessed the 5-year, nationwide impact on road deaths of the raise in the speed limit (November 1, 1993) on 3 major interurban highways in Israel from 90 to 100 kph. Methods. We compared before–after trends in deaths as well as case fatality—an outcome independent of exposure (defined as vehicle-kilometers traveled). Results. After the raise, speeds rose by 4.5%–9.1%. Over 5 years, there was a sustained increase in deaths (15%) and…
