Diminished reactivity of postmature human infants to sucrose compared with term infants
Sucrose is an effective calming and analgesic agent in infant humans, and characteristics of this calming effect suggest it may occur through an opioid pathway. Implications of this would be that infants who have experienced chronic prenatal stress and concomitantly elevated levels of endogenous opioids resulting in tolerance should therefore be less responsive to sucrose than nonstressed infants.
