Consumption sounds
This study examines mukbang as a case of consumer culture in which eating is organised for listening. Mukbang videos do more than display food. They stage ingestion as a mediated sensory event in which the sound of eating is recorded closely, sequenced over time and framed by platform conventions. Building on calls for a sonic turn in consumer research, the article develops vicarious listening to describe a mediated relation in which another pers…

Charles Taylor and the Political Recognition of Difference as a Resource for Theological Reflection on Religious Recognition
This paper argues for a wider presentation of the term ‘recognition’ that includes ‘religion’ as a dimension of recognition. Toward this end, the author draws on the Canadian philosopher, Charles Taylor, who considered whether religion might be a supportive context for the promotion of recognition. Recognition for Taylor includes recognition not only of sameness, but, significantly, recognition of difference. As the author of this paper highlight…
Constructing and communicating an ethical consumer identity
In recent years the adoption of ethical criteria when making consumer decisions has gained increasing popularity and has been studied as a way of moving towards a more sustainable consumption–production paradigm. Much research has focused on what motivates people to engage in ethical consumer behaviours considered as the expression of an ethical self. However, there is a limited understanding of the construction and communication of these ethical…
The Serengeti of Asia
The Eastern Plains landscape of Cambodia still has extremely good forest cover over a large area but wildlife populations remain low after many years of civil unrest and hunting pressure. Over the past decade concerted conservation efforts of WWF in collaboration with the Royal Government of Cambodia in the Mondulkiri Protected Forest and Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary, the two major protected areas in the landscape, have demonstrated modest succ…
Waiting for service on the internet
Purpose E‐consumers consistently complain that the internet is frustratingly slow. Most existing research on this phenomenon is based on the concept of “download delay”, that is, the time required for a web page to fully download to the e‐consumer's computer screen. This paper reports on an exploratory study of the phenomenon of waiting for service on the internet with the intention of extending the narrow conceptualisation of the phenomenon of “…
Waiting online
Although waiting on the Internet is widely recognised as a crucial factor in the evolution of e‐commerce and the Internet in general, it is not a widespread topic of research. This article identifies and reviews 21 papers based on 13 separate empirical studies on waiting on the Internet. The literature draws from the areas of marketing, system response time studies and quality of service studies. Having reviewed the existing literature, this arti…
Decline in lung function and mortality
BACKGROUND: There is a direct association between level of lung function, measured by forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and mortality rates. A low FEV may result from an increased decline in FEV1 with age, which may be an independent predictor of mortality. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between decline in FEV1 and mortality in a cohort from a community health study. SETTING AND METHODS: From five cross sectional studies in Busse…
