  • Structural Change in Hierarchic Spatial Systems in South West England Between 1861 and 1911

    Richie Barker, D Barker•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series B…•1980•References: 2

A methodology for the analysis of the structural relationships between centres at a given historical point in time is presented. The functioning of an historical urban system is described in a set-theoretic framework, and the concept of a coupling between two centres is introduced as a way of characterising their structural relationship. A coupling arises from the transfer of the unsatisfied portion of local demand between lower and a higher orde…

  • Hierarchic and Non-Hierarchic Grouping Methods

    Richie Barker, D Barker•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series B…•1976•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Hierarchic and non-hierarchic grouping methods are compared and the reallocation property of the latter is identified as an important advantage as it overcomes the problem of chaining, which is inherent in hierarchic methods. The two methods are used to produce regionalizations of crop composition data for the counties of Ohio in 1940. The grouping strategies are applied to the orthogonal crop dimensions from a Principal Components Analysis. Vari…
