  • Interprofessional education initiatives to teach advocacy in health professions programs

Open Access•Jessica Lees, Flynn Halliwell et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Health Sciences…•2026

Interprofessional education (IPE) offers a valuable platform for advocacy education in health professions programs, reflecting the collaborative principles central to advocacy practice. This narrative review aimed to interpret and synthesise how advocacy is conceptualised, delivered, and experienced in IPE initiatives within health professions education (HPE). A narrative review approach was used to synthesise empirical literature to provide a co…

  • A cross-sectional investigation of university students’ mental health service awareness and use

Open Access•Leanne Ngo, Lena Sanci et al.•ARTICLE•Higher Education Research &…•2026

  • Changes in mental health across the Covid-19 pandemic for local and international university students in Australia

Open Access•Melissa Russell, Nicola Reavley et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2023

The pandemic had a substantial negative impact on international students, particularly those living outside of their country of origin during the pandemic. The inequalities exacerbated by the pandemic were present prior to the pandemic and are likely to continue post-pandemic without action. Interventions to build the supports for international students need to be urgently explored

  • Towards a health promoting university

Open Access•Lena Sanci, Ian Williams et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

This rigorous and comprehensive examination of the health status of local and international students in an Australian university student population establishes the prevalence of mental health issues and other psychosocial determinants of health and wellbeing, along with academic performance. This study will inform a university-wide student wellbeing framework to guide health and wellbeing promotion and is a baseline for a 12-month follow-up of th…

  • Backyard benefits? A cross-sectional study of yard size and greenness and children’s physical activity and outdoor play

Open Access•J K Oakley, Jessica Oakley et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

In our study of young children residing in higher socio-economic areas of Melbourne yard characteristics did not appear to have a major impact on children's physical activity. Larger studies with greater variation in yard characteristics and identification of activity location are needed to better understand the importance of home outdoor spaces and guide sustainable city planning

  • Physical activity and asthma

Raisa Cassim, Elasma Milanzi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2018•References: 33

BACKGROUND: There is increasing interest in the role physical activity (PA) can play in the development and management of asthma. Understanding whether PA can have a positive effect is hindered by the potential influence of asthma on PA and a lack of relevant longitudinal data, leading to a debate on the existence and direction of these links. The aim of this study was to explore whether having asthma results in lower PA levels, and/or whether lo…

  • Sleep apnoea in Australian men

    Open Access•Chamara V Senaratna, Dallas R English et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

Health professional-diagnosed sleep apnoea is relatively common, particularly in older males. Associations between sleep apnoea and cardiovascular, metabolic, respiratory, and psychiatric disorders have important clinical and public health implications. As men are especially vulnerable to sleep apnoea as well as some of its chronic co-morbidities, they are potentially a priority group for health interventions. Modifiable lifestyle related factors…

  • Bone Density Characteristics and Major Depressive Disorder in Adolescents

Pouneh K Fazeli, Nara Mendes et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2013

OBJECTIVE: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is common during adolescence, a period characterized by rapid bone mineral accrual. MDD has recently been associated with lower bone mineral density (BMD) in adults. Our objective was to determine whether MDD is associated with BMD, bone turnover markers, vitamin D, and gonadal steroids in adolescents. METHODS: Sixty-five adolescents 12 to 18 years of age (32 boys: 16 with MDD and 16 controls; 33 girls: …

  • An investigation of the needs of grandparents who are raising grandchildren

    Open Access•Paul H Harnett, Sharon Dawe et al.•ARTICLE•Child & Family Social Work•2012•Cited by: 18•References: 1

Evidence suggests that children in out‐of‐home care function better when placed in kinship compared with foster care. Less is known about the functioning of children in the unique form of kinship care where grandparents are caring full‐time for their grandchildren in informal care arrangements. As grandparent carers are increasingly taking on this role, it is timely to investigate the functioning of the children in this form of care and the chara…

  • Prospective study of factors predicting uptake of smoking in adolescents

    Allan Mcneill, A D McNeill et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1989•Cited by: 11•References: 13

Risk factors for the uptake of cigarette smoking were examined prospectively in 2159 non-smoking secondary schoolchildren aged 11-13 who participated in a survey in 1983 and were followed up 30 months later, by which time 35 per cent had taken up smoking. In a multivariate logistic model, the strongest predictors to emerge were prior experimentation with cigarettes and sex, with more girls (41%) than boys (30%) starting to smoke. Other predictors…
