  • Reducing Concentrated Environmental Burden

Open Access•Charles Lee, Paul Mohai et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Justice•2025

This special issue on Cumulative Impacts and Government Decision Making is a first-of-its-kind collection of scholarship in this critically important area of public health and environmental justice. Pulling together scholarship that documents practice, policy, and research on the issue is both important and timely. Clearly, there exists a substantial body of practice associated with this important issue. While this work is still in development, i…

  • Cumulative environmental burdens and vulnerable populations

Open Access•Paul Mohai, Charles Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

Most studies examining demographic disparities in the distribution of environmental burdens have examined only one burden at a time. Few have examined how multiple burdens are concentrated and distributed among the American population. The objective of this study was to examine how multiple (13) environmental burdens are concentrated and how concentrated burdens are associated with where vulnerable populations reside. We utilized nationally consi…

  • Integrative analysis of RNA-sequencing and microarray for the identification of adverse effects of UVB exposure on human skin

    Open Access•Yujin Jang, Hye-Won et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Background: Ultraviolet B (UVB) from sunlight represents a major environmental factor that causes toxic effects resulting in structural and functional cutaneous abnormalities in most living organisms. Although numerous studies have indicated the biological mechanisms linking UVB exposure and cutaneous manifestations, they have typically originated from a single study performed under limited conditions. Methods: We accessed all publicly accessible…

  • Evaluating Environmental Protection Agency's Definition of Environmental Justice

    Open Access•Charles Lee•ARTICLE•Environmental Justice•2021

This article represents the first time that a rigorous evaluation of Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) current definition of environmental justice has been undertaken. This is a matter of some significance. Definitions not only reflect the historical understanding of an issue at the moment of formulation but can also affect practice. EPA's 30-year-old definition was actually formulated when its office had the “environmental equity” monike…

  • Predicting Lunar Eclipses in Northern Latitudes by Naked Eye Observation

    Open Access•Charles Lee, Thomas Reilly•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica•2020•References: 4

We investigate methods which may have been found appropriate for predicting lunar eclipses in northern Europe, where naked‐eye astronomy has to be adapted to conditions, which are different from those found at lower latitudes and in places with less cloud cover. The ecliptic is lower in the sky, and transient phenomena cannot reliably be observed under these astronomical viewing conditions. We consider those techniques, which only require the use…

  • A global reference for human genetic variation

Open Access•Corresponding authors, Adam Auton et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2015

The 1000 Genomes Project set out to provide a comprehensive description of common human genetic variation by applying whole-genome sequencing to a diverse set of individuals from multiple populations. Here we report completion of the project, having reconstructed the genomes of 2,504 individuals from 26 populations using a combination of low-coverage whole-genome sequencing, deep exome sequencing, and dense microarray genotyping. We characterized…

  • Testing the Learnability of Writing Systems

Open Access•Sharon Inkela, Sharon Inkelas et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual Meeting…•2013

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt:The world’s sound-based writing systems differ according to the size of the typical speech chunk which is mapped to a symbol: the phone, in so-called alphabetic writing systems, and the mora, demisyllable or syllable, in so-called syllabaries. This paper reports the results of an artificial learning study designed to test whether the acoustic stability of the speech chunks mapped to symbols is a fac…

  • Making the aural presentation of examination papers student friendly

Sheila Makeham, Charles Lee•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2012

Where a student can benefit from having an examination paper presented aurally, the traditional method is to provide a reader. This can be socially uncomfortable for students, and offers of readers are frequently declined. A trial is reported in which examinations were presented on an Apple iPod. This is a medium with which many students are comfortable, which facilitates easy exploration of the examination paper and repetitive listening and whic…

    Onyemaechi C Nweke, Devon Payne-Sturges et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 58

In March 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) collaborated with government and nongovernmental organizations to host a groundbreaking symposium, “Strengthening Environmental Justice Research and Decision Making: A Symposium on the Science of Disproportionate Environmental Health Impacts.” The symposium provided a forum for discourse on the state of scientific knowledge about factors identified by EPA that may contribute to higher burde…

  • Potential Strategies to Eliminate Built Environment Disparities for Disadvantaged and Vulnerable Communities

Daniel J Hutch, Karen Bouye et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 29

In 2006, the Federal Collaboration on Health Disparities Research (FCHDR) identified the built environment as a priority for eliminating health disparities, and charged the Built Environment Workgroup with identifying ways to eliminate health disparities and improve health outcomes. Despite extensive research and the development of a new conceptual health factors framework, gaps in knowledge exist in areas such as disproportionate environmental a…
