  • Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis immunization and sudden infant death syndrome

    A M Walker, Hershel Jick et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1987•Cited by: 5•References: 16

We compared the recency of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) immunization in healthy children with birthweights greater than 2500 gms who died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) to that of age-matched reference children, using a modified case-control analysis. Focusing on very narrow time intervals following immunization, we found the SIDS mortality rate in the period zero to three days following DTP to be 7.3 times that in the period beginn…

  • Drugs and stillbirth

    J B Porter, Jane Porter et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1986•References: 19

In a case-control study spanning five years' experience at Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound, we could demonstrate no plausible association between the use of spermicides, oral contraceptives, Bendectin, or antibiotics prior to conception and the occurrence of 73 nontraumatic stillbirths

  • Cancer of the breast, colon, ovary, and testis in the United States: Rates 1970-78 from a hospital reporting system

    J B Porter, Jane Porter et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1984•Cited by: 1•References: 7

We have explored the use of data from the Commission on Professional and Hospital Activities-Professional Activity Study ( CPHA -PAS) for ascertaining information on cancer incidence, with regional breakdowns. Extirpative surgical procedures were linked with discharge diagnoses to provide estimates of numbers of incident cases. We calculated incidence rates for four cancers: breast, colon, ovary, and testis. CPHA -PAS inferred rates corresponded …

  • Sedating drugs and automobile accidents leading to hospitalization

Hershel Jick, J Hunter et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1981•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The use of central nervous system depressant drugs among 244 people hospitalized for injuries suffered in an automobile accident was similar for drivers presumed at fault for the accident compared with other drivers and passengers. It was only slightly higher in the three groups than it was in the population at large. The absence of an important association in this population might be related to the warnings given to people filling prescriptions …

  • The epidemic of endometrial cancer: A commentary

Hershel Jick, Alexander Muir Walker et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1980•Cited by: 4•References: 17

Vital statistics show that a rise in incidence of endometrial cancer began in the mid-1960s on the West Coast of the United States. This rise was continuous and reached a peak in 1975. Elsewhere, incidence rates for endometrial cancer rose during the 1970s. It now seems evident that much of the rise in all areas of the country was due to replacement estrogen treatment. We estimated from data obtained from the Commission on Professional and Hospit…

  • Drug prescribing in hospitals: An international comparison

    D H Lawson, Hershel Jick•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1976•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This paper presents a comparison of prescribing habits for patients hospitalized in medical wards of university hospitals in America and Scotland. American patients received almost twice as many drugs both during and prior to hospitalization than did comparable Scots. The differences between the countries were consistent for symptomatic and for more specific therapies. As compared to Scotland, drug therapy in America costs patients more in terms …
