  • Changes in heroin-related ambulance attendances following the introduction of a medically supervised injecting room in Victoria, Australia

Open Access•Jessica J Killian, Bosco Rowland et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2026

BACKGROUND: Injecting drug use contributes significantly to morbidity, mortality and broader social harms globally. Supervised Injecting Facilities (SIFs) are harm reduction interventions that reduce overdose risk and facilitate access to health services for marginalised individuals. While international evidence supports the effectiveness of SIFs, Australian population-level surveillance data quantifying their impact on emergency medical service …

  • Mapping Adolescent Suicidal and Non-Suicidal Self-Injurious Behaviours Across Eastern Australia

Open Access•Ryan Baldwin, Glenn Melvin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Health•2026

In Australia, adolescent suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviours have been steadily increasing over that past two decades. However, existing research on the geographic distribution of these behaviours in Australia largely focuses on adults, suicides, or uses pre-COVID-19 data. This study aimed to map and describe the geographic regions where ambulance attendances for adolescent suicidal and NSSI behaviours are occurring. Data from…

  • The association between school holidays and trends in adolescent ambulance attendances for suicidal and non‐suicidal self‐injurious Behaviours

Open Access•Ryan Baldwin, Bosco Rowland et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2026

BACKGROUND: Previous research on the protective effects of school holidays on adolescent suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has relied on hospital records which underestimate self-harm prevalence and has not been explored in the post pandemic environment. This study utilised ambulance attendance data to explore whether protective effects of school holidays on suicidal and NSSI behaviours were present pre- and post-COVID-19 restrictions.…

  • Patterns of Acute Gamma‐Hydroxybutyrate Harms Requiring Ambulance Attendance

Open Access•Naomi Beard, James Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Review•2025

  • Trends in the complexity of self-harm hospitalisations over 11 years at a major regional hospital in Victoria, Australia

    Open Access•George Mnatzaganian, R Giallo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Our findings indicate a trend toward more severe cases of self-harm over time, observed in both males and females, with an increase in the use of multiple self-harm methods. Additionally, our results suggest that paramedic non-transports to the emergency department should be re-evaluated, as these patients experience worse outcomes
