The Messiah Promised in the Holy Scripture Came a Long Time Ago
This chapter presents an English translation of George Rust’s two poems, contained in his Latin academic text entitled Act Verses: Scripture teaches the resurrection from the dead, and reason does not contradict this and The soul, separated from the body, does not sleep . In the first poem, Rust says ‘Whoever is guided by God and reason, the mind’s two eyes, sails safely like the one whose course follows the light of the twin stars, Castor and Po…
George Rust, University of Cambridge Commencement Day Divinity Act Verses
This chapter presents an English translation of George Rust’s Latin academic text entitled The Messiah Promised in the Holy Scripture Came a Long Time Ago . Here Rust talks about how he considered demonstrating that ‘Jesus himself was the promised Messiah, since it is an accepted fact among liberal and judicious men that the stubborn incredulity of the Jews and their sworn hatred towards God’s Christ cannot be justified by any means’. Rust explai…
Origenian Platonisme’ in Interregnum Cambridge
This chapter aims to contribute to our knowledge of what is known as ‘Origenian Platonist moment’ by analysing English translations of three Latin academic texts by George Rust, with annotations to the two longer ones, written in 1656 and 1658 while he was a fellow of Christ’s College at the University of Cambridge: Messias in S. Scriptura promissus olim venit (The Messiah promised in the Holy Scripture came a long time ago); Act Verses, a souven…
Excavations at St Andrews, Castlecliffe, 1988-90
Excavation to the immediate west of the castle revealed considerable evidence of occupation (probably not continuous) dating from c. 1200 to at least the mid-sixteenth century. Most of the structures uncovered were associated with the medieval burgh not the castle. The first timber buildings gave way to a fourteenth-century tannery, probably when the castle was in ruins and unoccupied. The tannery gave way to two phases of residential buildings, …
Excavation at Lochleven Castle, 1982
Conservation work involved excavation of part of the NE range (possible oven) and of the SE tower (unproductive)
The charcoal-fired blast furnaces of Scotland
Revises W I Macadam (1887), but concentrates on excavations at Red Smiddy, Glenkinglass, Tarrioch, and Bonawe. No evidence for ordnance at Red Smiddy; at Glenkinglass the blowing house had been river-eroded but the rest was fully excavated, while at Bonawe there was 19th century reorganization of mid-18th century works (blowing engine blocks intact)
