The present review examines five books, one by a non-Baha'i, three by a Baha'i academic, and one by a Baha'i non-academic. The non-Baha'i volume, which is very short, is by a Danish sociologist of religion, Margit Warburg. The 19th century saw an enormous shift in the authority structure of Iranian and Iraqi Twelver Shiʿism, with the victory of a theological school (Usulism) that stressed the power of the clergy. I confess myself disappointed in Juan Cole. He is a fine academic, possessed of a sharp intelligence, but he just cannot see why anyone should be concerned about the influence of religious or other ideological commitments on scholarship, particularly on studies of the religion or ideology in question. I have never suggested that believers are unable to write intelligently about their beliefs, nor would I wish to do so. What I have criticized are …
