  • The Faith of Christians and Hostility to Jews

    Open Access•Gavin I Langmuir•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•1992•References: 1

There is a fundamental question that any historical analysis of the relations between Christianity and Judaism must face. What is the relation between the hostility that Christians have directed at Jews and their faith as Christians? It is a hard question to answer for both conceptual and evidential reasons. The conceptual problem is that historians may be misled by some of the theological categories which are so deeply embedded in the languages …

Gavin I. Langmuir's work on the formation and nature of antisemitism has earned him an international reputation. In History, Religion, and Antisemitism he bravely confronts the problems that arise when historians have to describe and explain religious phenomena, as any historian of antisemitism must. How, and to what extent, can the historian be objective? Is it possible to discuss Christian attitudes toward Jews, for example, without adopting th…

    Gavin I Langmuir•ARTICLE•French Historical Studies•1970•Cited by: 5

The hegemony of law in medieval political theory and of rights in medieval political practice is a hallowed commonplace. Almost equally honored has been the view, propounded most forcefully by C. H. Mcllwain, that medieval men believed that they could find but not make law. McIlwain's view no longer commands general assent, yet a rejection of his conception of legal change does not necessitate a denial of the importance of law in medieval politic…

That history is a seamless web, that any scheme of periodization is an arbitrary convenience to suit a point of view, these are wellknown propositions. Yet the most influential of all periodizations, that which divides history before the Incarnation from history after, is as unmodifiable as our sense of historic time itself. It orders the passing years for agnostics and Communists as for Christians. For the Jews the standard is dual, yet the Chri…

  • The Jews and the Archives of Angevin England: Reflections on Medieval Anti-Semitism

When should an historian analyze the assumptions which underlie his work, and when, if ever, is it incumbent on him to include in his work a discussion of the beliefs and procedures which have influenced his treatment of a subject? Recently historians, and in particular English medievalists, have been criticized for their anarchic empiricism; yet willingness to utilize any approach which promises concrete results, regardless of an integrated theo…
