Changes in sport and physical activity participation for adolescent females: A longitudinal study
Overall levels of physical activity did not significantly decrease over adolescence, which is positive for physical health. However, the transition from structured sport to non-organised physical activity may effect social and psychological health, which needs to be further examined
Trends in body image of adolescent females in metropolitan and non-metropolitan regions: A longitudinal study
Differences across time, region and grade level were found among adolescent females on body size and dieting behaviour, but not physical appearance. Adolescent females experience early and increasing body size dissatisfaction and dieting as they age, but stable perceptions of physical appearance. Age and geographic region are important considerations for the timing and targeting of interventions to address body image concerns. Further investigati…
Population levels of sport participation: Implications for sport policy
It is a positive sign that participation in these popular sports increased by over 50,000 participants from 2010 to 2012. Large proportions of the population aged 5-14 participate in club based sport. Participation rates decline sharply in late adolescence, particularly for females, and while this may not be a concern from a broad health perspective so long as they transition into other forms of physical activity, it is certainly a matter of conc…
The contribution of sport participation to overall health enhancing physical activity levels in Australia: A population-based study
Club sport participation contributes considerably to LTPA at health enhancing levels. Health promotion policies, and more specifically physical activity policies, should emphasize the role of sport in enhancing health. Sport policy should recognise the health-promoting role of community-based sport in addition to the current predominant focus on elite pathways
Participation in modified sports programs: A longitudinal study of children’s transition to club sport competition
If we can retain children in sport it is likely to be beneficial for their health. This study highlights considerations for the development and implementation of sport policies and programming to ensure lifelong participation is encouraged for both males and females
Participation in sport and physical activity: Associations with socio-economic status and geographical remoteness
This study demonstrates the complexity of the associations between SES and location across different contexts of participation. Nevertheless, it seems that once initial engagement in PA is established, SES and remoteness are not critical determinants of the depth of engagement
Role models of Australian female adolescents: A longitudinal study to inform programmes designed to increase physical activity and sport participation
In light of the importance attributed to the presence of positive role models in promoting physical activity during adolescence, this study examined role models of adolescent girls and their influence on physical activity. Seven hundred and thirty two girls in Years 7 and 11 from metropolitan and non-metropolitan regions of Victoria, Australia, were surveyed regarding whether they had a role model (in general, not limited to sport), and if they d…
Power, regulation and physically active identities’: The experiences of rural and regional living adolescent girls
Drawing on interpretations of Foucault's techniques of power, we explored the discourses and power relations operative between groups of girls that appeared to influence their participation in Physical Education (PE) and outside of school in sport and physical activity (PA) in rural and regional communities. Interviews and focus groups were conducted in eight secondary schools with female students from Year 9 (n = 22) and 10 (n = 116). Dominant g…

The relationship between body image, physical activity, perceived health, and behavioural regulation among Year 7 and Year 11 girls from metropolitan and rural Australia
This study examined the relationship between educational year level, regional differences in adolescent girls' body image perceptions, body mass index (BMI), physical activity (PA) level, self-reported health, and dietary behaviour. Also, the role of PA behavioural regulation on body image was examined. The sample (N=732; Year 7 aged 12.23 years and Year 11 aged 16.18 years) included girls in Year 7 (n=489) and in Year 11 (n=243), recruited from …
A comparative study of factors influencing participation in sport and physical activity for metropolitan and rural female adolescents
The aim of this research was to provide a comparative analysis of the influence of behavioural alternatives, autonomy, competence and relatedness on participation in sport and physical activity for female adolescents within metropolitan and rural settings. Eighteen focus groups were conducted with a cross section of schools within metropolitan Melbourne and rural Victoria, Australia, involving 12–13-year olds and 15–16-year olds, using a semi-str…
The test-retest reliability of a health promotion assessment tool in sport
Evaluation tools for measuring health promotion (HP) policies, practices, and organizational capacity in a sport setting are absent. This research describes the test-retest reliability of the Health Promotion in Sport Assessment Tool (HP-SAT), which measures nine domains of HP in two contexts: State Sporting Organizations (SSOs)-organized events, and support provided by SSOs to affiliated clubs. The HP-SAT also gathers information about HP polici…
Characteristics of physically active and inactive men from low socioeconomic communities and housing estates: A qualitative study using the socioecological model
This qualitative study compares experiences of men from low socioeconomic status (SES) communities who achieved sufficient physical activity (PA) with those who did not. The socioecological model of health guided interviews with men (n=25) and community health workers (n=4) to explore individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, environmental and policy influences on PA participation. Men generally reported that they had poor health, fin…
Using a Socioecological Approach to Examine Participation in Sport and Physical Activity Among Rural Adolescent Girls
Adolescence is a critical time for developing lifelong healthy behaviors, including active lifestyles. Participation in sport and physical activity, however, declines during adolescence, and few studies have comprehensively identified why, particularly among rural girls. This article identifies a range of independent and interacting factors that influence sport and physical activity participation of rural adolescent girls. The socioecological mod…
Engaging community sport and recreation organisations in population health interventions: Factors affecting the formation, implementation, and institutionalisation of partnerships efforts
Sport and recreation organisations can play a key role in the development of physical activity strategies in health promotion. There is a paucity of research that has examined the engagement of a wide range of sport and recreation organisations in partnership approaches that promote active lifestyles. This research used a multiple‐case study protocol to explore partnership development between a range of professional (e.g., paid recreation staff) …
How Do We Handle Emergency Information in Our Borough
Observes one local borough′s handling of emergency information in cases of crisis. Looks at the organizational aspects and in particular to how specialized personnel can be brought into play – using a control centre and a liaison controller. Goes on to show how this would be used and the tasks of the principles involved
