Analysing Covid-19 outcomes in the context of the 2019 Global Health Security (GHS) Index
INTRODUCTION: The Global Health Security Index benchmarks countries' capacities to carry out the functions necessary to prevent, detect and respond to biological threats. The COVID-19 pandemic served as an opportunity to evaluate whether the Index contained the correct array of variables that influence countries' abilities to respond to these threats; assess additional variables that may influence preparedness; and examine how the impact of prepa…
The Creative Development of Johann Sebastian Bach, i
In the vast field of Bach scholarship, there are relatively few surveys of his style and compositional technique. Traditionally Bach scholars have concentrated on source-work; more recently they have probed the religious, intellectual, and social context of his output. Most studies of Bach's style have focused on specific genres or compositional techniques (as with Laurence Dreyfus's work on ritornello movements). Given the amount of literature o…

Mathieu Kassovitz's La Haine and the Ambivalence of French–Jewish Identity
From the 1995 release of La Haine , critics have questioned whether Jewish-French film director Mathieu Kassovitz is ‘authentic enough’ to speak for the ethnic banlieue . Yet La Haine is preoccupied with this very anxiety. This article examines how the film self-reflexively explores the place of Jewishness in the social crisis it dramatizes. La Haine achieves this ‘Jewish’ self-reflexivity primarily through the relationship its arguably most full…
Publication and the Anxiety of Judgement in German Musical Life of the Seventeenth Century
Much music published in Germany during the seventeenth century contained prefaces expressing anxiety about critical or hostile readers. Often such anxiety was a rhetorical conceit intended to gain patronal support. But it may also have been legitimately aroused by the practice of judging composers from their publications. The recipients of presentation copies often had them reviewed before granting a monetary reward. Professional musicians also s…

Changing demands made by senile dementia on the National Health Service
In 1976 and 1981 two studies were undertaken to identify the numbers of elderly severely mentally infirm patients receiving care in a range of institutions in Worcestershire and to examine the appropriateness of the special units planned for them. The numbers of planned places matched the totals of patients in care but the nature of the provision was wrong. The new units were planned for able bodied but demented patients, with a relatively low st…
