  • The Deficiency Disparity

    Open Access•Athahn Steinback, Steven Childs•ARTICLE•Journal of advanced military…•2023•References: 5

This article synthesizes power transition theory (PTT) at the grand strategic scale with military studies methods at lower levels of analysis. We analyze the Russo-Japanese War, the recent Afghan War, and the ongoing war in Ukraine as conflicts where political-military specificities enabled outmatched powers to win or force a stalemate. These cases demonstrate the decisive influence of power projection, doctrine, geopolitical constraints, and rea…

  • Developing nations, drones and deterrence

    Steven Childs, Steven J Childs•ARTICLE•Comparative Strategy•2021•Cited by: 1

Ensuring the survivability of second-strike nuclear forces is critical for strategic stability, yet some scholars contend that technological changes in surveillance by established nuclear powers are reducing their survivability in a new era of counterforce. What are the implications of the proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on deterrence between small nuclear powers (SNPs)? Would these systems allow SNPs to appreciably increase thei…

  • Granting Security? U.S. Security Assistance Programs and Political Stability in the Greater Middle East and Africa

Steven Childs•ARTICLE•The Journal of the Middle East…•2019

U.S. security assistance programs are expected to increase the capabilities of partners in the Middle East and Africa by leveraging the provision of armaments and training through foreign aid. Can policymakers increase their reliance on such programs to achieve foreign policy aims of promoting regional stability while retaining political flexibility? Using multivariate logistic regression of Middle East and African states spanning 1970 to 2015, t…

    Open Access•Alison Healey, Frances Kay‐Lambkin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2013

There is a growing need to provide treatment for cannabis users, yet engaging and maintaining this population in treatment is particularly difficult. Although past research has focused on the importance of therapeutic alliance on drug treatment outcomes, this is the first study to examine the dimensions of therapeutic alliance for cannabis users compared with users of alcohol or other drugs in a naturalistic setting. The acceptability of Internet…

  • Points of the Star, Branches of the Cedar

    Steven Childs•ARTICLE•Democracy and Security•2012

The use of military policy to foster the political integration of ethno-religious minorities has long been assumed to aid in the formation of national identities in heterogeneous societies. Recent scholarship has challenged this notion in emphasizing the role of political contestation. Using a contrast of contexts research design of Israeli and Lebanese military integration policies, this research looks to the relationship of the military in rela…

  • Illuminating the Global Suicide-Attack Network

Benjamin Acosta, Steven Childs et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Conflict and Terrorism•2012•Cited by: 14•References: 23

This article examines the contemporary phenomenon of suicide attacks by fusing network analysis and time-series econometrics. We find that a global network of militant organizations drives the reproduction of the suicide-attack phenomenon, and brokers within the network mark the primary perpetrators and diffusers of the tactic. The introduction of a fourth level of analysis of political violence demonstrates that network connections between organ…

  • From Identity to Militancy

    Steven Childs•ARTICLE•Comparative Strategy•2011•Cited by: 2

Understanding human terrain exhibited in historical and cultural attributes offers strategic thinkers a critical but often neglected tool. This article provides a cogent example in Hezbollah with the definition of a distinct identity, the adoption of an Islamist ideology, the designation of strategy to meet tangible objectives, and the manifestation of the tactics used to achieve those specified objectives. The analysis highlights the pertinent r…
